Just because a person may post an article that may be interesting or controversial that does not mean the OP agrees with everything that the author has written. I would never attack an OP, I would point out what I don't agree with the article instead. Lets be adults and have a normal discussion, instead of attacks and back biting.

(7,661 posts)I try not to get sucked into a war of words. Sometimes it happens though, after many attacks. I'm only human.

UglyGreed
(7,661 posts)attacks and sometimes I bite back but I don't find it to be too helpful. I could understand if it is written by the OP him or herself but articles are a different matter.

(53,339 posts)When you were challenged on it you had a chance to reply, and you did. That's discussion.
UglyGreed
(7,661 posts)but I did not attack the OP personally. I wrote of my experiences while trying to keep it civil. I tried very hard to respect the other person's point view. Other posts I decided not to reply because it would do no good and it was better to let sleeping dogs lie. I try to picture myself talking to the person face to face instead of being behind a screen.
pinboy3niner
(53,339 posts)Some replies challenged both the opinions expressed by your source author and the timing of your OP.
UglyGreed
(7,661 posts)I copied and pasted it which I believe are the rules here. As for the timing, first that article came out yesterday so I posted it on the day it came out. Also my days since I'm disabled run one into another and sometimes I forget what is going on in the world. I'm sorry if offended some of you but I don't believe I ruined your day or the other the Vets here since you do get much more support than criticism these days. I know that was not always the case and that was not fair since back then many of you were conscripted. On a final note, if I were to be offended every time someone says all people with back pain are fakers and malingerers I would of offed myself a long time ago. Just sayin"
pinboy3niner
(53,339 posts)As some pointed out, doing that now--the day before Veterans Day--is not like raising the issue for discussion at other times. Where and when your source author posts is his issue; bringing it here, now, is yours.
While Veterans Day honors current and past military service and is distinguished from Memorial Day, which honors our war dead, it's natural for vets this day (including DU vets) to remember those with whom we served, including those we knew and lost.
I knew more than 60 guys whose names are engraved on the Wall, including an Army roommate who was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously.
You may have valid grievances of your own about posts that pop up any time that strike you as insensitive and offensive. You should understand why such posts would be especially offensive if they coincided with a special time of honor for those at whom the offense is aimed.
For a sense of decency and sensitivity alone, if not for respect, this is not a time to re-post an article objecting to veterans like those I knew and lost being called heros.
UglyGreed
(7,661 posts)I should of waited to post that article. It was a knee jerk reaction, or just being a plain old jerk. Sorry.

(12,157 posts)I don't know why so few use the
to mark a quote. I have seen replies to an OP that definately think the poster said or wrote the article. If the paste is clearly marked by using "excerpt" the poster can then make a comment that is clearly their own.
UglyGreed
(7,661 posts)about the way to use of excerpt button. Thank you for pointing that out. It will come in handy!!!
TexasProgresive
(12,157 posts)div class="excerpt" I left out the brackets so it will post the words div class="excerpt" then to close click again/div
like this
You can do the same with the b,iand u
I'm not sure as to the use of "blockquote but will try it with your OP:
Just because a person may post an article that may be interesting or controversial that does not mean the OP agrees with everything that the author has written. I would never attack an OP, I would point out what I don't agree with the article instead. Lets be adults and have a normal discussion, instead of attacks and back biting.
That works nearly as well as "excerpt"
RiverLover
(7,830 posts)UglyGreed
(7,661 posts)I will certainly put that to use in the future.
randome
(34,845 posts)You can highlight the entire portion and then press either the Excerpt or BlockQuote buttons. That way the start and end tags will be applied to the highlighted portion.

(30,884 posts)If you're around here long enough you too may become fed up with some types of OPs, for example:
1) OP posts, without comment, a link to an article espousing right wing or otherwise controversial points of view. Because the OP didn't comment the readers don't know why the OP thought it was worth posting here and one logical conclusion is that it was posted to stir up crap.
2) OP has a pattern of posting similar "controversial" articles in a hit and run manner -- if an OP thinks it's a worthy topic for discussion, the presumption is that the OP will stick around for said discussion.
3) OP calls out DUers generically.
4) OP and/or the OP links are espousing views that absolutely do not need to be tolerated here, e.g. homophobic or racists stances.
None of the above are OPs in good faith and none of them should be treated with kid gloves.
UglyGreed
(7,661 posts)I try to resist but sometimes it is like an automatic reaction. Even though I do not do this if it is an article written by someone else other than the OP.

(11,001 posts)who troll to see how they can attack the poster. They never respond on the issue but they nitpick.

(14,449 posts)I admit yesterday I did become disgusted about an article being extremely disrespectful to the veterans to the point of calling the article out. I would say that sometimes the OP seeks out nasty articles to just be mean. However, overall you are correct.
UglyGreed
(7,661 posts)for your reply. I can understand why you were disgusted, I did not mean to disrespect you. I'm just worry about this war mentality and IMO many of you are being used to recruit others. I don't know if my opinion is wrong or right but I try to be honest.
yeoman6987
(14,449 posts)I just take a small segment of the war machine and try to protect them. I try to look out for the little guy in all areas. The war machine got so big due to businesses and politicians. The E-2 has little say in anything. Many are just trying to provide for their family or get a career. Maybe the raw-raw gets out of hand, but certainly not on Memorial and Veterans Day. Had that article came out in January, I may have even agree with certain aspects of it. Keep posting because we are all in this together!!! Have a great day!

(4,524 posts)DU is actually one of the most tame places on the internet. Try having a discussion elsewhere without being trolled, being name-called, or even having your life threatened. It's not easy.

(22,271 posts)developed on it's own. Different people have different discussion styles. Some more aggressive, some less. Personally, the last thing I want to see on a political discussion group is milquetoast 24/7 and, goddess forbid, an echo chamber. My suggestion to you is to either grow a thicker skin or explore the Groups, of which there are several here on DU and which are far less contentious. Starting an OP about how "other" people act, without checking your own actions is not a good way to make your point, btw.

(11,833 posts)I don't know why people do it so often. I think a lot of people are jumpy, defensive & paranoid. Not just here at DU. All around.
