BY SUHAUNA HUSSAIN

The developer of a proposed 17-story mixed-use project in Downtown Berkeley recently announced its decision to use 100 percent union labor in the project’s construction.

Project developer HSR Berkeley Investments signed an agreement several weeks ago with the Building and Construction Trades Council of Alameda County, which represents the county’s 28 labor unions, to use union labor. The project, called the Residences at Berkeley Plaza, will be located at 2211 Harold Way.

Robert Stoker, president of the council, said that it is a “win-win” situation when both labor unions and developers come together and do something for the community.

Stoker said it is important that construction workers make livable wages. The project will employ roughly 300 skilled workers, who will earn $65 per hour on average, and take about three years for completion, he said.

That will include any insurance and benefits costs, plus contract admin fees, and so on. I know when engineering services are contracted out, the average price is $103/hr. But I'm sure they will take home a nice pay nonetheless.

His take home is $55/hr. Thats after the insurance and pension. Its actually closer to $100/hr. That $65/hr is most likely take home pay, not including taxes. I imagine Berkley on par with NYC. Other trades make more. Electricians make $60+/hr in the union. Crane operators closer to $90/hr.

I would not have expected that. I know several union tradesmen who live by me and they don't bring home that kind of money.

Bricklaying is hard work though, so more power to him. If we could bring the wages up everywhere, we'd take off as an economy again.

Typically, Building Trades members pay 100% of their medical and pay into their own pension with no match. Take home pay us considerably less than $65/hr.
