Today and Father's day.
To everyone who says that being a soldier is just like any other job, I can disprove it in one word; "desertion".

for the US government for four years. Then I got out of the service and became a prisoner for 41 more years.

If no one were willing to serve, our freedoms would not last long. Most of us understand that.

Makes em feel superior to the sheep.

(297 posts)Progressive were against the glorification of the military and soldiers. Obviously that is not the case anymore. DU worships the military and the troops just as much a Free Republic does.

(28,762 posts)I don't think were glorifying them, just recognizing their sacrifice.

(7,286 posts)So many people I know have served or are serving in the military. And indeed many DUers as evidenced by Mr Scorpions Fall In thread.

By Siegfried Sassoon
I knew a simple soldier boy
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.
In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
No one spoke of him again.
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.
Make of it what you will.

(28,261 posts)Sassoon's poems help me deal with the "smug-faced crowds" on Facebook, this time of year.

They're almost as bad as the half-wits racing to rationalize it.

(13,184 posts)The man was a figure of world historical importance. He should be recognized--if not lauded--for that. His voyages led the way to a globalized planet, for better and worse.
I heartily recommend the book "1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created" by Charles Mann for anyone whose interests extend beyond sloganeering.

(25,406 posts)Fourth of July is militaristic.
Memorial Day and Labor Day have lost their true meaning and have come to be associated with barbecues and sales.
Columbus Day? Celebrate that murdering genocidal imperialist, are you kidding?
Halloween? Offensive to Wiccans, plus kids wear costumes that perpetuate sexual stereotypes (girls being princesses, for example) and people wear offensive costumes that glorify violence and murder.
Thanksgiving is offensive in that it portrays a sanitized and unrealistic version of the relationship between the European settlers and the Native Americans.
Washington's Birthday celebrates a racist slaveholder who owned hundreds of slaves and chose not to free any of them.
What does that leave? Does anyone have issues with New Year's Day? And I guess Martin Luther King Day is fine?
