http://www.trueactivist.com/nfl-star-quits-football-to-build-free-farm-and-feed-hungry-people/On February 28, 2009, Brown signed a five-year deal with the St. Louis Rams that was worth $37.5 million, and included a $20 million guarantee....
After he left football, Brown purchased a 1,030 acre farm near Louisburg, N.C, where he harvests food for the hungry.
Last weekend, Brown gave away 46,000 pounds of sweet potatoes, in addition to the 10,000 pounds of cucumbers that he has already given away.

(18,124 posts)I see that public display I cringe. Like the Pharisees, soooooo religious. Showing their piety, in public, when it's no more than hypocrisy because of their lack of help for the poor in private.

(16,926 posts)He said that his agent told him he was making the worst mistake of his life, and he answered "no I'm not".
He also said he'd never farmed a day in his life and learned everything from YouTube and with help from local farmers.
Here is a hero to uphold for the children.

(56,828 posts)If Brown made that $20 million or so, he's set for life unless he makes a lot of stupid investments.

(8,918 posts)His contract ended at the end of the 2013 season.
He made $37.5 million minus agent fees and taxes.
Also, I have a friend that's a sports agent. Hd told me that
most agents only get 3% commission off football players
maybe 5%. He also said most football players are pretty dumb.
Obviously this one wasn't.
Good for him.

(56,828 posts)that later became an accountant/CPA for one of the big national accounting firms. He worked out of Boston, so his company had clients that were in every major team sport - basketball, baseball, football and hockey. In his opinion (and this was back in the mid 1990s), hockey players were the worst with their money. Of course, this was before the rush from high school to the NBA became so common, so maybe it's changed?

This is a great story. Giving back is good. If I had gazillions of dollars, I'd give it back too. How much money could one possibly need for a comfortable life? I've never understood the greed of the 1%.

(3,286 posts)It's rare for a well paid athlete to be so community-minded. I would (almost) bet my pension cheque that he was raised by a single, church going mother. Many pay lip service(on camera) to this ideal, but few get around to doing what Jason Brown is doing.

(19,253 posts)My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I've told her that if we ever had tens of millions of dollars in the bank, I'd just start buying land, growing food, planting trees for wildlife habitat, and be content for the rest of my life.
Good for Brown; he's living the dream and I applaud him for that!
logosoco
(3,208 posts)same thing.
That is always my first thought if I came into money (but I don't play football or the lottery, so it probably won't happen!)...buy a farm! Lots of land for growing food, lots of barns for animals, houses for people. What's the point of hanging on to more than one needs?
