BTW I am loving the Sonic Highways HBO series.

(45,319 posts)Pretty easy to say 'give it away' when you are ultra rich and do not in reality give all of your music away. He makes it sound like the copies are all gifted and he profits from the shows only. That is just not the case.
Two really rich artists one doing retail business at 45 and the other at 24. Basically they are the same business person with different product styles.
I really dislike the habit some wealthy people have of pretending they do not seek profit or make money. 'I believe in giving it away'. Then give it the fuck away. But do not sell it then puff at others that they should give it away. Hypocrisy is hypocrisy even with long lovely rock star hair.

(7,011 posts)and not just the one's that get air play. She's no Joni Mitchell, but she's certainly a lot better than you indicate. She may not make songs to your taste, but she is certainly a talented young woman. She comes up with good musical and lyrical hooks that appeal to a lot of people, including my two young daughters and their friend. I remember what great fun I had with them as they were bopping and singing along to "Mean" while I drove them to school.
My wife likes TS, too. As parents we both really like Never Grow up.
Here's a really cool collaboration with T-Bone Burnet and the Civil Wars on "Safe & Sound" from the Hunger Games sound track. T-Bone Burnett called HER.

(7,011 posts)of Jennifer Lawrence's character Katnis trying to protect the young girl Ru.
Ru reminded me of my own 9 -year-old daughter in looks and demeanor, and I had haunting thoughts of her trying to survive in some distopia.
I was really moved by that on-screen relationship, and this song makes me feel very protective of both my daughters. (6 yr too)

(4,876 posts)I can tell you that you are mistaken. Very, very little money is made off of selling music. Before the internet, artists would create an album and then tour to support the album, to try to increase sales. They would sell millions of copies. Now a Gold Record (500,000) is considered a smash success. Tours are where the money is. Some artists have figured this out. Some are slaves to the record companies who still think selling records is where it's at. I'm not saying it's right, it's just the way it is. Also Foo Fighters albums are available for free all over the internet, and I'm not talking about pirated copies so...
One other thing, Grohl has a reputation in the business as being one of the most generous, most kind, most easy going people out there. The only other artist on the road with even close to his rep is Bruce Springsteen. You can tell much about an artist by the way they treat the people who actually do the hard part. And Grohl's reputation couldn't be better.
And no I'm not a Foo or a Nirvana fan, just a guy who knows what it's like to be on the road.

(7,661 posts)since I'm a big Nirvana fan and when kurt died I lost interest in Grohl. But with this Sonic Highways series I have a new found respect for Grohl. Sell out or whatever I enjoy the series. I love music and the history behind it.

The Foo Fighters music doesn't appear until the end of each episode and the show can be enjoyed without liking the FF's song.
Grohl is doing a very good job IMHO.

(1,305 posts)Artists who snub Spotify can take a hike.
She stood to earn millions a year in royalties from it alone.
Maybe she should stop parroting what the record company executives tell her to stay and look into it on her own.

(46,416 posts)By contrast, I still don't know why Taylor Swift is famous. There is not one song of hers I find worthy of listening to, it's just generic bland pop. Maybe she knows her moment is almost over and wants to rake it in while her looks can still carry her.
demwing
(16,916 posts)Does that fall under your definition of generic bland pop?
TwilightGardener
(46,416 posts)There's nothing about her voice or music that grabs me in any way. She's a household name because the music industry has basically gone down the shitter and bland teen-girl emo pop is going to be one of the few genres that's left standing, apparently.
Rex
(65,616 posts)But it is nothing original either. She is a very good singer and performer, not all 2nd acts from Idol can say that. She is smart and taps into the same market as Carrie Underwood. Won't begrudge either one of them for smashing success.
At least artists make their money the honest way. They don't fuck up the economy on their way to wealth.

(21,691 posts)I've given all of their albums a try, and while there's a few songs I like, overall I just don't enjoy them. I don't begrudge anyone else enjoying them or question their taste (anyone listening to something merely to impress others with their good taste is doing it wrong, anyway) - everybody likes different stuff.
I have to admit I haven't heard much Taylor Swift, but have somehow acquired random bits of trivia about her, and she seems like a pleasant and funny young woman.
It would be nice if Grohl, with his years of experience in a changing industry, had phrased his sentiments more constructively but then again, that's not his job. But still.

sendero
(28,552 posts)... but musical or vocal talent? You could find what she does in any high school in the country IMHO.
But, I do not begrudge her success, she earned it and at the very least she is a hardworking, savvy businesswoman.
If there is a particular licensing arrangement she does not wish to participate in, that is her right.
UglyGreed
(7,661 posts)and of course all artists are allowed to make a living, be it Miss Swift or Mr. Grohl. I think he should mind his own business, but I thought this was worth posting.

(6,342 posts)She's not starving.
She's part of the 1% complaining about not having enough money. Im sick of these rich artists who think they are entitled to a billion dollars because they write a fucking song. I've heard music that is infinitely better written by starving indie artists. And they at least care about the music and the people who listen to it...unlike the mass produced shit that the industry creates today.
She can pull out of Spotify. No one cares but Spotify. Anyone that really wants her album without paying will just pirate it now.
UglyGreed

(997 posts)Streaming services pay about the same royalty as radio -- about 18 cents/1000 impressions. The reason that royalties are higher than streaming services is that radio is broadcast to many listeners at the same time while streaming services are just to one at a time. So the per-play royalty is lower on streaming services but that's only because there is only one impression for that play.
