New York's first cat café is dropping in December

Time Out New York:

If you’re into snuggling fluffy kittens and stuffing yourself with sweets, then Meow Parlour, the upcoming cat café from Macaron Parlour mavens Christina Ha and Emilie Legrand, is a purrfect spot for relaxation in the city.

Opening December 15, the kitten kingdom will feature more than furballs, offering Blue Bottle Coffee pour-overs, Harney & Sons teas and cat-shaped pastries like black and white cookies ($2.25), macarons ($3) and cheesecake bars ($3). It’s the first permanent food-and-feline destination in NYC, but before you start gawking at the idea of hairballs in your java, the pet playroom is a separate, reservation-only space. To get cat time, sign up for half-hour slots ($4 each) or a $30 five-hour period, then roam around with the felines. If you can’t bear to part with your new friends, consider adoption: Each of the cats is from KittyKind, a non-profit cat rescue organization.

The only way for this company to survive is with discretionary income which many in New York must have. Cute idea I must say.

Did you forget your tag or are you seriously unaware of what it's like to be poor in America. Many in poverty cannot afford $10 for necessities much less cat cookies and fancy tea.

but this is a great idea for the people who can afford it. Anything that gets cats off of the street and responsibly cared for is good business as far as I am concerned.

To the kitty lovers of this thread who do have disposable income perhaps you could spare a $10 donation to the no-kill kitty shelter in my area. They were fantastic when I found a stray last winter wandering near the highway and I always try to keep them in my heart. http://www.caring-for-cats.org/donating.html

I'm not into sports at all, and think it is insane how much people spend on Seahawks merchandise, but don't begrudge them, or the positive effect on the local economy.

May as well kvetch about every new restaurant opening, lord knows we have more than enough, but really not a thorn in my side, even though I can't afford a sit down restaurant meal most of the time. Doesn't mean I'm going to sneer at patrons of whatever doesn't float my boat.

$10 is a lot to spent on tea and cookies.
The government may say how things are improving, but it's still so tough for so many of us out here.
The encouraging economic news hasn't spread to most of the nation. We're still struggling to meet daily needs.

$10.00 on 'tea, cookies and kitty time' and buying dinner for their hungry children isn't even a question?

Or maybe you were being sarcastic?

THAT cute idea in today's economy, thanks Washington where the bubble you all live in as you take more and more from the Working Class, has turned the middle class who at one time COULD afford the $10.OO for 'kitty time', into the struggling poor whose votes you feel entitled to and seem shocked when the former middle class has other priorities, that cute idea is out of reach to the Working Class.

What, in principle, makes a Chestnut Praline Latte less decadent than tea, a cookie, and cat-time? Novelty?

What makes neither of these things a deserved period of personal rest and recuperation?

Considering the season...maybe we should move on to shaming those with stuffing, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and whipped cream for Thanksgiving. For that matter, maybe we should shame anyone not fasting on Thanksgiving so that they can give the money not spent to the hungry.

And they are always awesome friendly cats who are calm around anything because they are constantly exposed to noise and other animals and lots of different people. The big orange one they have now is so gorgeous, and he owns the place and knows it. This cat cafe would be a great way for people to find the right adoption cat for their home. I think it's a great idea.

But I hope they aren't dressing the cats up in costumes. Is that cat above wearing a skirt?

There is usually more than one cat.

A couple of years ago, she was distressed by the number of cats who were living there. People kept dumping them. Her facility is not licensed to have cats boarded and adopted. She was doing it anyway, until the number of cats went down. The shelters were full and she didn't want to euthanize perfectly good cats.

I think this whole stretch of road must bring out the worst in animal dumpers. I live about a mile south of the vet's office. Right now, I have seven cats who live in my corn crib. Several of them were dumped here. One of my close neighbors has the same number. We feed them and take care of them. We provide shelter for them in our outbuildings. My son adopted two, but that is unusual.

People need to spay and neuter their animals. And one of these days, I am going to catch someone doing this. I will not hesitate to call the sheriff.

at a rifle range in Austin. How its hearing remained responsive, I don't know. People hammering away with deer rifles, etc., while this fluff butt was nuzzling you. It would often take a nap in a carpet of spent casings while a booming storm raged. Miss that old guy.

that greeted everyone as they arrived. The little bit of fur she did have was soft as anything I had ever touched. I already have 3 cats, but I was ready to take her home with me if only I hadn't been so far from home and in someone else's car. It was the country so they were free to come and go as they pleased, but I hope that something like this in NYC there is at least a second floor that is closed off to customers so that the cats are "free" to escape when they are overstimulated and also so they have a place to rest during the day. Cats need a lot of sleep and personal time.

The concept itself is fine, though I'm not sure if it will work. Will there be litter boxes in the cat room? Can you bring the coffee and cookies in with the cats? How will the cats do with eachother and with strangers? Cats are usually a little shy.
