I think a rider supporting green energy or subsidies to green energy US based companies or rewards for communities that hit green energy targets.
Let them have their pipeline, just work to make solar energy economically competitive or even the better choice.
Both Republicans and Democrats could win on this. Oil in the short term; Green Energy in the long term.

I was thinking what can we get for it.

(9,126 posts)A 99% tax on all proceeds from the pipeline which goes to fund free higher education for everyone. And single payer. And solar panels on every roof. And updating the electricity grid. And a 25% raise for every teacher in the country. Man, I like this. Too bad Democrats don't have the guts to do this.
What I don't like is, well, nothing we can do about it now. But vote or it's all your fault!

(24,303 posts)massive fines for any spills. I'm talking amounts that begin with a B.
Shouldn't be any opposition to that, right? They say it's totally safe.

(14,881 posts)Double and triple backups, daily inspections, and large $$ in escrow up front to pay in advance for clean up of any spills.
I also like the end product being sold back into the U.S. plus all proceeds to clean/green/renewable subsidies.

(1,305 posts)That all those who profit from that pipeline shall be stoned to death, on live television, by citizens who use that water to live.
If they're so certain it will never leak, it shouldn't be a problem.

(45,984 posts)Probably not. The Senate could attach the rider and the pipeline would pass with it; but then the conference committee would take it out.
More likely the Senate Republicans would just kill the whole thing and take it up in January, when it would pass without any real threat of a rider.

(369 posts)Actually two riders.
1) All products from oil from the KeyStone Pipeline have to stay in the US.
2) Other US oil products equal to the amount from the Keystone Oil has to stay in the US.
The reason for #1 is obvious.
The reason for #2 is to prevent transhipping an equal amount of oil to other countries. It would actually double the supply.
On a more serious note, the cost of extracting the Canadian Tar Sands Heavy Crude is actually greater than the $70 a barrel it is selling for right now. I don't think the pipeline will be used that much.

(51,076 posts)That oil is highly abrasive and there will be leaks as sure as I'm typing here now and the last thing we need is to contaminate our water sources with what will be mostly canadian oil going to foreign markets. How difficult is that to understand I ask?
I worked for a while where they transported sand in pipe, (foundry,) and I'm here to tell you it eats the pipe away in short order. Where I worked they fluidized the sand with air and piped it up and over the roof to the core room where it was needed and it was a constant battle to repair that line. It matters not what is used to fluidize the sand with either oil or air it still will be eating at that piping.
No riders, no pipeline period
