Four names pop up ahead of possible Boxer retirement.

Among the most talked-about potential candidates are (Gavin) Newsom, (Kamela) Harris, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and his successor, Eric Garcetti.

California Democrats most often come with one of two pedigrees: Bay Area or Los Angeles. A ranking Democrat in the Bay Area is known by more than a quarter of the state's Democrats; a Democrat in the Southern California area commands the attention of upward of 40%. That is a key advantage over politicians from other areas, but the edge vanishes if it's divided by multiple candidates.

For example, Newsom and Harris. Their profiles in the recent poll were almost identical. Each was at least twice as popular in the Bay Area as in Los Angeles County, though Newsom was more popular up north, on their joint home ground; their standings among Democrats, independents, minority voters, urban residents, men and women, young and old were remarkably similar.

One of them against, say, Villaraigosa, would be a classic North-South clash. But if there were two candidates from the north, the edge could move south.

But it's a fact that she's not raising money, either. I remember going to two SF fundraisers in 2007 (with appearance by Sen. Barack Obama and former VP AL Gore), three years ahead of 2010. She's barely raised 100k for 2016.

Her campaign funds are a matter of public record. If you're saying that she's holding more than is recorded you are accusing her of a federal crime.

en. Barbara Boxer says she has yet to make up her mind about seeking a fifth term in 2016, but there's no shortage of signs that the Democrat may be opting out.

It's not just that she has less than $200,000 in her campaign account, compared with $3.5 million at this stage before her last election fight. Some comments from those who know the 73-year-old senator are also telling.

"She is not running for re-election," said one longtime Democratic fundraiser with deep ties to Boxer, who spoke only on background.

State Democratic Party Chairman John Burton, Boxer's longtime friend and mentor, says she has not informed him of her intentions. But at a Democratic Party fundraiser in San Francisco on Thursday night, co-hosted by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Kamala Harris, Burton told the crowd, "When we meet here four years from tonight, we could be looking at one California governor and one U.S. senator."

Don't get me wrong, as a Californian, I am devastated by this news. I love Boxer, Feinstein, not so much. But Boxer hasn't come right out and denied it (as would be expected).

Perhaps she hasn't completely made up her mind and I sincerely hope that is the case. I don't think she will have any problem being re-elected if she chooses to run.

However, her refusal to denounce the speculation, leaves us with no alternative but to look for an adequate replacement.

The OP given choices don't qualify in my opinion.

On potential successors for a 74 year old senator? The seat hasn't been up in 20some years, California is a big state, I'm sure there are plenty of people eyeing it, and reading tea leaves.

it IS important for Democrats to be courting YOUNGER possibilities.

Republicans learned their lesson with Dole & McCain.. Older is NOT necessarily better in this day and age.

It's a scary thing to think about, when elected republicans are getting younger, and our party philosophy is not on the same page.

As crass as it sounds, optics matter..

If voters have a choice of a younger candidate with a young family, vs a craggy older person who got their first ipad at age 55. the younger person looks more savvy, even though their ideas may be dangerous.

Experience matters, but what used to work back "then" may no longer even be relevant to "now".

This is just another reason why term limits (a la the presidency) makes sense to me. Too many people vote incumbents in, time after time because they are lazy voters.. It would be nice to have a constantly "churning" crew in DC. Some think that we would "lose out" on our senior statesmen with time limits, but wouldn't it be luverly to know that McConnell had only 1 year left..or Scalia? or Thomas?.. We NEED new blood...in all arenas.

I know it's not a popular topic, but our aging elected dems in Congress is absolutely problematic. And I include my own Senators in that- Bernie Sanders and Pat Leahy.

advancing gay marriage here in SF, Newsom was a disaster for San Francisco. Or should I clarify, for anyone in SF making under 100k. Electing him will only continue the pro-Big Business Democratic trend.

I went to many community events here in SF over the years that featured him and came away with the certainty that everything he did was really about achieving higher office. SF was already in his rear view mirror when he won his first term. I voted for Ammiano and Gonzalez in their runs against him -- they actually gave a shit about San Francisco.

He would actually be perfect for DC -- he is all about the deals.

I know he's a "Democrat," but I seem to remember he is more of a Hillary Clinton "Democrat." Wait. Wasn't he fighting against the Medical Marijuana dispensaries in Southern California? How did he handle the Occupy L.A. movement? Southern Californians, pipe in here.

And Eric Garcetti. Is he any relationship to Gil Garcetti -- a well-known name to Southern California Boomers.

Personally, I want to see Newsom as Governor and Harris as our next Senator.
