Saudi Arabia outlaws ‘tempting eyes’

A new law in Saudi Arabia banning ‘tempting eyes’ has become the latest example of female oppression in the country.

The law, which states that women with alluring eyes will be forced to wear a full veil, has been branded ‘stupid’ by dissenters and roundly criticised on social media, aina.org reports.

Sheikh Motlab al Nabet, spokesman of the Saudi Arabian Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, said they ‘had the right’ to force women to cover their face.

‘The men of the committee will interfere to force women to cover their eyes, especially the tempting ones,’ he said.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]By this reckoning, Saudi men obviously have no morals, no ethics, and absolutely no self control.

They should all be wearing leashes and collars with electroshock capability, controlled by well-trained, 24-hour female handlers.

The corruption of religions is merely a tool used by corrupt authorities to hold on to their power and wealth.

I am always surprised to find DUers that do not recognize this.

Power has a great tendency to corrupt (in fact, it should probably be recognized as a scientific principle by now) and some religions have obviously been used as tools towards this end.

But there are many religions in the world and many religious leaders and followers and not all are corrupt and many have very good (even progressive) messages.

Your experiment has been tried before. Remember the Soviet Union? Check out North Korea today. No religion does not mean no corruption or greed?

Until people understand the actual correlation between power and corruption, I fail to see how we can progress.

Power absolutely needs to be monitored and regulated fiercely.

Religion should not be granted any governmental powers but people should feel free to practice their religious beliefs freely.

Seriously????

Do you really suggest that anyone that posts here at all (given all the NSA and others surveillance abilities) is easily frightened?

As I stated up thread , the 'take religion away' policy has been tried (and failed) in other regimes before.

This is not some new theory you guys just came up with. It has been used for centuries. In fact, many Americans are descended from those that sought to escape religious persecution in other countries.

As far as I can see, the anti-religious fervor has become nearly as dangerous as the pro-religious fervor recently.

If they could not, America would not exist today.

Do we need to keep religion separate from government? Of course.

Attempting to suppress a persons first amendment rights to practice their religion (even when it is not on private property) is against our Constitutional rights.

Do you also suggest that it gay couples only be allowed to practice their marriage on private property and not in public?

Of course not, that would be as ludicrous as suggesting one's religion could only be practiced on private property.

That is not a fair comparison. Being gay is not a religion. Apples and oranges.

The poster sounds like they are saying the government should not make laws forcing religious beliefs on people who do not want those beliefs forced on them and that people should not proselytize to unwilling victims. Trust me. When you have been proselytized in my hometown, you were victimized. They are disgusting about it and overbearing and absolutely rude. And they WILL cross that line and physically assault you if you refuse to agree to their version of religion. They don't call it the Bible Belt for nothing.

I realize that not all of any religion are the same way, but when it comes to government functions, laws, hideous dress codes, and proselytizing, religion needs to be kept out of it. Practice your religion all you want, but don't expect those of us who do not to be all warm and fuzzy if the most hideous right wing version of that religion is shoved down our throats.

I don't admire your thought processes, but it is very important for democracy that you be allowed to think as you will and that you have the right to advocate your thoughts in the public square. Otherwise, there IS no freedom.

Authoritarian regimes, like the Saudis - now they are the ones that feel the need to tell their citizens what they may and may not express in public.

In many different religions, I have seen females advocate for some of the most hideous crap imaginable too. Those males could not do it without some females, usually the loudest ones here in America, aiding and abetting them. Think about female Faux News hosts and conservative women, if you need examples. Those males would not be able to get by with it if women did not do as they are told. Of course, that is more about America and in other western societies.

I get the feeling women can't say much of anything they want to say in a place like Saudi Arabia. They need a serious revolution and some help fighting the hideous men who control the laws there, it sounds like. I still resent that that Saudi Arabia are considered "allies" to America. It disgusts me.
