Domino’s Founder Created All Catholic, No Birth Control Town In Florida

One millionaire, though, is testing the First Amendment to its outer limit by creating an entire town that is based on his Catholic rules. The worst part? The town is built in part with input from Justice Antonin Scalia. I wonder how he’d rule if this made it to the Supreme Court?

Ave Maria, Florida houses only about 2,500 residents. It’s the pet project of Domino’s Pizza founder Tom Monaghan, who is strictly Catholic.

..

Ave Maria was founded in 2005. Florida’s governor at the time, Jeb Bush, called the town, “a new kind of town where like-minded people live in harmony between faith and freedom.”

By “freedom,” Monaghan means the freedom to follow his church-imposed laws, including no birth control or X-rated TV channels. You can be sure there are no abortion doctors in the town either.

...

There is a very good chance that Scalia will get to rule on the town he is invested in. Ave Maria University is suing the Obama administration in much the same way Hobby Lobby did. They want an exemption from the Affordable Care Act’s birth control mandate.

While liberals have little hope that the Roberts/Scalia court would rule against Catholicism, one has to wonder how they’d rule if a town like Dearborn, Michigan (for example) tried to institute actual Sharia Law?

Ave Maria: Catholic theocracy in Florida

How did this happen? Ave Maria, Florida, is a city run according to strict Roman Catholic principles, a place where the church is the state, where democracy is non-existent: a town controlled by one eccentric religious despot.

The eccentric religious despot in control of of Ave Maria is Domino’s Pizza founder and former Detroit Tigers’ owner Tom Monaghan. A catholic extremist, Monaghan has used his considerable fortune to create a Catholic theocracy in southwest Florida.

In Ave Maria, pharmacies are prohibited from selling condoms or other forms of birth control, stores are prohibited from selling pornography, and cable TV is not allowed to carry X-rated channels. In Ave Maria, Catholic doctrine is the law.

How did this happen? Sarah Jones writing for Americans United, explains that thanks to a law passed by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, Monaghan co-owns the town along with the Barron-Collier development company – and they retain that control for perpetuity. Ave Maria holds no elections. Every member of its governing board has been handpicked by Monaghan and Barron-Collier.

======

It sounds like a Lord with his Serfdom. This will not bode well if the 1%ers take a page out of Monaghan's playbook.

I would rather not live there and I Catholic. But the Amish way of life doesn't appeal to me either. I doubt most would want the city of Berkeley to change the way they live.

someone indicated that they have had to create some of their own businesses. For example, none of the mainstream banks would put a branch in that town and a supermarket chain also refused to put a store there too.

If so, based on the lives of your average American Catholic, there is x-rated content being viewed by many men and some women and kids, and 98% of Catholic women use birth control sometime during their lives, so there is protected sex going on in this town, the method delivered straight to their front door, or picked up at the CVS, just outside city limits.

Its mainly populated with seniors wanting to live in south Florida. So birth control is not an issue. A typical retirement community. It's way out in the boonies with few neighbors. Wouldn't live there if you paid me. The law school set a record last year with the fewest graduates passing the Bar in the State of Florida.

which weren't selling. Then they targeted Senior housing. I would be willing to bet that the majority living there are Seniors instead of families. As you mentioned, Collier is not known as a family oriented area anyway. So who did they think would move there? The county is mostly retired people and snowbirds.

However, not having NCH in there might be more of a problem for older people.

When we were looking for a retirement home in 2007, I checked into the various Del Webb communities. I was pretty damn sure I didn't want to move into a community called Ave Maria! If people were interested and looked over the community rules and regulations and moved in and now don't like it, they can always move out.

I wouldn't choose to live there, but apparently some people do. It's fair to assume that they must agree with the local theocracy before they move in. If they agree to the rules beforehand, I wouldn't call this a First Amendment issue.

But there has been trouble in paradise. Construction has halted, leaving half-built subdivisions to mildew in the tropical heat. Lawsuits and a federal investigation have dogged Monaghan. Ave Maria University's ambitious athletic program fell to pieces amid an unholy trinity of F-bombs, firings, and defections. And the town's hidden, anti-democratic, and perhaps unconstitutional origins have been splashed across local news. Instead of a city on a hill, Ave Maria has become a place of secrets and sectarianism.
