The Centers for Disease Control said on Sunday that 172 people on a cruise ship arriving in California had fallen ill with the highly contagious norovirus during a nearly month-long trip.
The Crown Princess has more than 4,100 people on board; it was scheduled to be met by CDC staff upon arrival in San Pedro. CDC staff will conduct testing and evaluate the response.
In April, 129 people on the same ship contracted norovirus during a seven-day cruise off the California coast.

(25,183 posts)to consider another way to spend money on expensive vacations. I don't recall hearing about this sort of thing happening at resorts on land.

(21,115 posts)but still....those employees will NOT take precious time off when they are ill....and then they get on board and thousands of other folks are trapped on board with them...
I think as a nation we need to start considering ^^^ that when we go out to eat Fast Food (on dry land) as well....and those are not just rich people at stake...

(8,311 posts)Because there was no one scheduled to be on the clock except me, I came in one day feeling like absolute dogshit. Stayed only long enough to work the part of my shift that was uncovered, but still managed to cause the spread of the flu to the entire office, because they too were afraid of not coming in.
At that time I was a temp, and afraid if I missed work without being sent home, I'd lose my job. Even later, though, when I became a permanent employee with sick leave, I got lectures on staying at home when I had a cold or the flu.

(25,183 posts)can go all over a call center. My company got smart a few years ago and started providing either free or heavily subsidized flu shots, but this year, they did them a bit late for me, I got mine on my own a month earlier.

(42,759 posts)... provided you can stay away from the bathroom for more than five minutes at a time.
That's exactly why I don't want to go on a cruise. My sister and her family went on one, and one of my friends went on one. Their description of being on a cruise, even before the sewage, "tropical enchantment in the bathroom" and everything else convinced me that I wouldn't go on a cruise if I was paid to do so.
"Tropical Enchantment" "Bountiful Waves" ...

(11,441 posts)And the thought of being jammed on one with 4,100 other people sounds like torture.
I prefer to fly to my destination, bike around, take the bus with "the locals," or rent a car. European river cruises appeal to me, Alaska, Nova Scotia, etc... much smaller scale.
