While most of the illegal immigrants to whom Mr. Obama granted tentative legal status were already under little fear of deportation, they were usually working in the shadows, either off-the-books or using a bogus Social Security number that trapped them in low-skilled jobs and left them vulnerable to abuse by unscrupulous employers.
But Mr. Obama said millions of them will now be granted legal work permits along with their official stays of deportation, giving them a chance to seek better-paying jobs, demand a minimum wage and report workplace safety violations without fear of retribution.
Those new protections could produce an average wage jump of 12 percent, according to a Congressional Budget Office estimate attached to last years Senate immigration bill.
Native-born workers, however, will see a more mixed picture and those in some low-skilled jobs, particularly ones that require a background check, such as drivers, school janitors or hired security guards, are likely to face new competition, said Steven A. Camarota, research director at the Center for Immigration Studies.

Looks like conservatives are already pushing the jobs angle. They will say that immigrants are going to steal your jobs.

(15,039 posts)They worried the displaced people of New Orleans would flood into Los Angeles and, willing to work for lesser wages, might take their jobs. Don't know if it happened. It didn't to those I know. But it was a definite fear.
Overall, I believe these developments will prove positive for all. But the transitional period will have its challenges. Of that I believe we can all be certain.

(17,865 posts)yesterday. She just received her CNA certification this summer. I mentioned that I thought the President Obama's action would open the field to more workers who now can get registered with the state. I can't think how this would not put downward pressure on CNA wages.
It is not immigrant bashing to point out this out. How much of an impact I am not certain. Whether the overall societal benefit outweighs the immigration change in status I am also uncertain of. I have the same concerns about H-1 B and other professional Visas. My older daughter is working towards becoming a mechanical engineer, and I have already seen examples in my own career as a mechanical engineer where an H1-B Visa holder obtained a position which I was trying for.
