9. Why is Lantus (insulin) $208 per vial? Because they can charge that much

I use Humulin, a cheaper and less good insulin*, which my insurance covers. My cat gets Lantus, which is a better long-acting insulin, but I pay full price for his (he only gets 2 units, so a vial lasts a while). I have excellent coverage, yet I'm given an inferior insulin because of the cost.

*the difference between the two is in the peak. Humulin has a peak and then drops off; Lantus is uniformly effective with almost no peak, meaning better glucose control.
