Why Isn’t A Possible Lynching in NC National News?

Thu Nov 20, 2014 at 07:34 PM PST
Updated: Why Isn’t A Possible Lynching in NC National News?

by ExpatGirl

Lennon Lacy was a 17 year old African American high school student whose body was found hanging from a children’s swing set in a largely white mobile home park in rural North Carolina less than two months ago. The local police declared his death a suicide within nine hours of finding his body – despite the fact that the shoes on his feet were not his own and were two sizes too small, despite his parents saying that conclusion couldn’t be right and despite the fact that locals in the small, rural town he lived in have alluded that his death might have been a hate crime. Lennon Lacy, a 17 year old African American high school student, was found hanging by the neck in a largely white trailer park and local police closed the case on the possibility that he was lynched before performing any investigation. Why don't more people know about this?

Lennon’s family wants a federal investigation. The NAACP has asked for a federal investigation saying “we believed there was a good possibility of a race-based homicide and possible law-enforcement involvement in the decision to provide the State Medical Examiner with their conclusion that this was a suicide before any real investigation of a possible homicide had been undertaken.“

I wrote a diary about this yesterday. The title was provocative and specifically mentioned lynching. More people cared about a fire chief using the N-word. I find that shameful. I will keep writing about Lennon Lacy and the need for a federal investigation every.single.day until this community knows his name and why a federal investigation is important.

My diary from yesterday appears below. Whether or not you read it, please join me in pushing for a federal investigation into the possible murder by lynching of this child.

is a considerable undercurrent of violence and horrific acts that are covered up that the light of day never reaches. And often masked by those whom one would think would have the integrity and responsibility to clean up the transgressions, but often they are part of the problem.

They don't care about covering news, I mean. They need to entertain us and make a profit, but they are not required to tell us the truth about what is happening in the world or even in our own backyards.

Why would I want my good congress person to quit after so many years if he/she has been good enough to continue to win and is representing us the way we want him/her to do? Why would I want to take the risk of some teabagger winning because some billionaire buy the election. When I already have someone who is looking out for the greater good.

Teenager's mysterious death evokes painful imagery in North Carolina: 'It's in the DNA of America'

Ed Pilkington in Bladenboro
Thursday 9 October 2014 12.54 EDT

Friday 29 August was a big day for Lennon Lacy. His high school football team, the West Bladen Knights, were taking on the West Columbus Vikings and Lacy, 17, was determined to make his mark. He’d been training all summer for the start of the season, running up and down the bleachers at the school stadium wearing a 65lb exercise jacket. Whenever his mother could afford it, he borrowed $7 and spent the day working out at the Bladenboro gym, building himself up to more than 200lbs. As for the future, he had it all planned out: this year he’d become a starting linebacker on the varsity team, next year he’d earn a scholarship to play football in college, and four years after that he’d achieve the dream he’d harboured since he was a child – to make it in the NFL.

“He was real excited,” said his Knights team-mate Anthony White, also 17, recalling the days leading up to the game. “He said he was looking forward to doing good in the game.”

The night before the game, Lacy did what he always did: he washed and laid out his football clothes in a neat row. He was a meticulous, friendly kid who made a point of always greeting people and asking them how they were doing. Everybody in his neighbourhood appears to have a story about how he would make a beeline to shake their hand, or offer to help them out by moving furniture or anything else that needed doing. “He was in the best sense a good kid,” said his pastor, Barry Galyean.

His brother, Pierre Lacy, said that football was the constant that ran through Lennon’s life since he started out as a Pee Wee: “He was very serious about being a professional, very passionate about it. He never changed his mind or wavered from the course.”

His father saw him and told him to go to bed...then heard him go outside around midnight. They found him at 7:30 the next morning.

I think this indicates someone called or texted him and he went outside to meet them. I certainly hoped they checked his cellphone records.

read the article yesterday - and nothing from my initial awareness has worn off. in fact, it has intensified. unfuck america!

it is up to each one of us to walk the talk and teach our children well. how much more of this shit can we stomach? this may be a job for anonymous (as are all of those involve in the coverups of the michael brown murder and that of the beaten man with bipolar disorder). but, the rest of us better step up and stop the hate (now!) because it continues to get uglier and uglier. no place to raise a family of color or mixed heritage.

i am older and have done my share of standing for non violence for civil rights, the environment, and many other human rights issues. i am only one person and can't even stand for more than 10 minutes (i take my chair to demonstrations) - but, we must continue doing what we can to stop this shit.

thank you for the post, babylonsister. you are so right.

dating an older woman who was white. Surely pissed a lot of the good old boys off. Yes, they still try to intimidate black men with white women. Smaller shoes than his feet, they just put some on wherever they carried him after kidnapping him. It was dating the woman that got him killed. Guaranteed. Not post racial in that trailer park, "largely white" trailer park. Man this shit is just like the 50's. Emmett Till was murdered after allegedly flirting with a white woman in Mississippi. I remember my parents talking about those "crackers" that killed that boy in Mississippi.

With the last six years bringing out decades of barely suppressed virulent white racism, this murder, among MANY recently, is not something that will be tolerated for too much longer, methinks. Truthout.com had a good one on white racism today.
