Nestle Working On 'Exercise in a Bottle' For the Gym-Averse

Scientists at Swiss food and beverage colossus Nestle say they're working on an edible product guaranteed to get the attention of couch potatoes everywhere; nothing less than "exercise in a bottle."

Nestle researchers say they've made a breakthrough in understanding the way an enzyme involved in regulating metabolism can be stimulated using a compound they've dubbed C13, a possible initial step in creating a consumable product that can mimic the fat-burning benefits of exercise.

While such a magic potion is a long way from market shelves or even getting approval from regulators, scientists at Nestle's Institute of Health Sciences in Lausanne say they've made some progress in the search for natural substances that can act of metabolic "triggers" to simulate the effect of exercise.

They've been focusing on plant and fruit extracts to determine which ones might modulate an enzyme known as AMPK, which serves as a master metabolic switch to control the body's utilization of fats and sugars.

But the sugar content would be increased proportionately, to increase sales. Net effect; overweight people with revved up metabolisms.

Unless you're a diabetic or have some similar condition, of course.

The problem is with overeating, and sugary/carb-heavy foods tends to be very calorie dense. It's incredibly easy to eat an extra day's worth of calories if you're munching on Oreo cookies.

Neither carbs nor sugar are harmful at a reasonable intake, hence "balanced diet".

Veggies and fruits are made of sugar and fiber.

severely limit exercise.

Right now, I'm fighting some orthopedic problems, and can't exercise nearly as much as I would like, and I've gained weight. I try to limit my diet/carbs, but for me, exercise is key to maintaining a satisfactory weight.

I would rather exercise than take the potion, but until my problem is cleared up (I am in treatment), I'd like something to help with the weight gain.

There are plenty of people in my boat, and in worse ones.

and if I'm not active I don't get hungry. Also, I don't eat stuff with a lot of condiments like ketchup, mayo and such. Mayo with tuna and perhaps lightly on a sandwich but that's it. I'll have cucumbers with just salt instead of a salad with dressing. It's been that way for years with me I don't mind plain food. Not much junk food either, maybe pretzels or popcorn but not much else. I wish I had more to tell you and I understand it is not easy at all.

one more thing, since most of my time is spent by myself, when I get bored I read and now post here to many people's dismay I'm sure. I don't eat out of boredom I choose to learn instead. If it not for the internet I don't know what I would done with myself these last eighteen years. One can only watch so many reruns without slipping a noose over one's neck. Good luck and feel well.

The 'fat burning effects of exercise' are pretty modest. You control your weight by eating less. Exercise is for conditioning and health.

Something tells me this will be something that negates about 200 calories worth of energy, and convinces snackers that it's okay to eat about 2000 calories more.
