Is Winnie the Pooh Transgender or Intersex?

One town in Poland seems to think so — and they are not happy about it.

Winnie the Pooh, the beloved animated bear that has delighted children worldwide, has been banned from a playground in Tuszyn, Poland, because the city council there believes the bear is either transgender, intersex, or gay. According to The Independent, Winnie was being considered as the new famous character that would adorn the city’s new playground, when “the idea soon sparked outrage among more conservative members, with one councilor even calling the Pooh bear a ‘hermaphrodite.’”

The meeting was secretly recorded by a (presumably more liberal) city council member then leaked to local media. The Independent reported council member Ryszard Cichy saying, “The problem with that bear is it doesn’t have a complete wardrobe. It is half naked which is wholly inappropriate for children. [Poland’s fictional bear] is dressed from head to toe, unlike Pooh who is only dressed from the waist up.”

Another council member, Hanna Jachimska, also attacked the creator of Winnie the Pooh, author AA Milne, lambasting, “This is very disturbing, but can you imagine, the author was over 60 and cut [Pooh’s] testicles off with a razor blade because he had a problem with his identity.”

I don't really know much about cartoon character sexuality, but I'm pretty sure that Winnie the Pooh is a cartoon bear.

Bears are wild animals which can be dangerous if disturbed or annoyed by humans.

Winnie the Pooh does not seem to behave much like a bear, and has apparently befriended a number of animals which a bear would more likely treat as prey, with the exception of animals not native to bear habitats. For example, one of Winnie the Pooh's friends is a tiger. I don't think a bear/tiger interaction of any sort would go well.

Likewise, Winnie the Pooh's habitat includes a kangaroo, as well as a tiger. Kangaroos are native to places in which there are very few or no indigenous placental mammals. Non-placental mammals and marsupials would not, I expect, do well in places inhabited by bears.

So, there are quite a few things odd about Winnie the Pooh as a bear, let alone whether there is some question as to what sorts of sexual identities one finds among bears, or even fictional cartoon bears.

When I was a kid I asked for a Winnie the Pooh book for my birthday and my dad objected to the Pooh thing. He thought I was being a smart aleck until one of my teachers pointed out to him at a meeting about my behavior that it was a child's book and I wasn't being bratty at all in that respect. He had brought it up as part of his problem with me.

and all male. The picklefaced Puritans on the city council need to take deep breaths and try to achieve a better grip on reality.

What Milne might have been has no bearing on his charming children's stories.

Odd that they so easily condemn the man and his work without compassionately considering the massive pain he was in.

Prunefaced hyper religious sex phobes and busybodies of all types need to be put on house arrest so they could concentrate on the afterlife and we wouldn't have to put up with them.

He's explicitly referred to as "he" several times in the books. I mean, it's theoretically possible he was a female bear living as a male but I think we'd be overthinking Milne's creation then.

Each character represents a particular form of egoic delusion.

Friggin' idiots, to literalize a "wedged bear in a great tightness" to mean homosexuality. We all get mightily metaphorically stuck, but I have to wonder about these people who see homosexuality in everything.

I was raised on the Pooh books to the extent that I still have a stuffed Pooh bear next to my bed (and I'm 38) and my father, who is a Taoist, explained his beliefs by giving me a copy of The Tao Of Pooh. They're completely innocent, non-sexual beings and Milne's claimed mental illness doesn't affect the timeless charm of his creations.
