"Here" being Germany. And, no, it is a different situation. I visited East Berlin while it was still that. We had friends there.

My takeaway was that when one person lives with compassion and does the right thing - it lives on to make the world a better place if even for a small circle of people.

I don't think our country has reached the level of the STASI.

I agree with KT2000 -- any similarity with NSA ends with the ending of the movie when the spy finally "gets" it. NSA will never "get" it.
