(15,438 posts)and I will look to them in the future as the family member of choice.
Pitt Bulls are the most beautiful, well-built, sweetest dogs to be misunderstood.
Even though she'd been beaten, lost an eye, even had pups to protect, this little Pitt accepted the friendly help of strangers with not so much as a growl. Try that with my Chow Chow!

(22,165 posts)He neglected to tell me that she was a pitbull .... Serenity has grown into the sweetest, most loving and loyal dog I could have ever imagined.
She is a lap dog and spends an inordinate amount of time on my almost 80 year old mother's lap, she is my tiny 21 year old daughter's running companion and she is my little love (so much for pit bull owners being "macho' wannabes).
She requires all the training and care one would need for any large dog .... she is worth every minute.

(34,442 posts)I contribute to their Cheeseburger Fund when I can. He uses plain cheeseburgers to lure strays to him so he can catch them. His rescue videos on YouTube always make me tear up. The change in the dogs is always so dramatic. The fear in their eyes when first approached always changes to intense relief, then to joy when they are in their foster homes. It's awesome.

(5,402 posts)And "they" blamed them for what, dogs attacking humans? The only reason to blame the humans is the dang fools who keep promoting aggressive working breeds as house pets and the jackasses who by the dogs without any idea of how to deal with the aggressive nature.

The study also notes that the frequency of dog bites in relation to breed corresponds to the popularity of the breed, and is not a gauge of the breed's supposed aggressiveness.
And Pit Bulls score better that average on the ATTS aggression tests: http://atts.org/breed-statistics/statistics-page1/
Better than other popular house pets like Beagles, GSDs, Poodles & Golden Retrievers.
To say Pit Bulls is aggressive by nature is pure, unadulterated ignorance.

(5,402 posts)because, after all, a tendency to behave in a part
A 20-year (1979-1998) study by the American Veterinary Medical Association into fatal dog attacks on humans concluded that "fatal attacks on humans appear to be a breed-specific problem (pit bull-type dogs and Rottweilers)," and that "pit bull-type dogs and Rottweilers were involved in more than half" (67%) of all the 238 recorded dog bite-related fatalities (DBRF) in the United States during that period, with pit bulls accounting for 66 deaths. They also wrote that: "It is extremely unlikely that they accounted for anywhere near 60% of dogs in the United States during that same period and, thus, there appears to be a breed-specific problem with fatalities."
I understand that you love the breed. Doesn't change the fact they were bred for blood sports such as bull baiting, bear baiting and cock fighting.

(36,649 posts)And given that this report suffers from the fact that they primarily used inaccurate media reports to determine the breed, the whole idea that it's a breed-specific problem is bogus.
A lot of dogs were bred for blood sports - such as any type of hunting dog. They've also been bred for hundreds of years to be members of human families and companions. So, unless you're looking at Poodles & GSDs for the same reasons, then you're just spreading vicious, baseless rumors & blowing smoke.

(25,699 posts)German Shepherds were the go-to "tough dog" for a while, as Cesar points out. And of course you'd get these "tough guys" who want a "tough dog" and they go out and get whatever is fashionably 'tough" and most of the time they neglect the animal or mistreat it to make it "tough" and so when it finally bites the shit out of someone, it reinforces the "tough dog" bullshit and encourages more "tough guys" to go out and get their own 'tough dog' and the cycle continues.

(25,699 posts)Them and an assortment of hounds. I don't mean that they are mean, but these are very no-bullshit kinds of dogs, as far as i can tell. no tolerance for children or harassment at all. Meanest dog I've met was a dachshund. They look goofy, but don't underestimate a twenty-pound meat rocket with sharp teeth, bad eyes, and a very low center of gravity.
