From the lyrics of the song You've Got To Be Carefully Taught, from South Pacific:

You've got to be taught
To hate and fear
You've got to be taught
From year to Year
It's got to be drummed
in your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught

You've got to be taught
To be Afraid
Of people whose eyes
are oddly made
And people whose skin
Is a different shade
You've got to be carefully taught

You've got to be taught
Before it's too late
Before you are 6 or 7 or 8
To hate all the people
your relatives hate
You've got to be carefully taught

"A second experiment featured adults who are told to put away the toys in exchange for stickers. Toddlers were surprised to see a slacker adult who did not put any toys away get rewarded.

Another recent study suggests that not only do kids develop a sense of fairness early, they’ll support the punishment of those who don’t respect it. "

have to disagree on this one. Anybody who has been around animals for any length of time will observe that the majority will almost always pick on a minority who looks different. For instance, flock of 21 birds, 18 dark gray, 3 light gray. The 18 will pick on the 3 all day long. The 3 hang out together apart from the 18. They didn't do this when they were babies, even when there was an obvious difference. When they grew up - instance bird racism. 4 horses, form a four level hierarchy based on something only horses can fathom. Age, gender or size not an issue. One horse is added. The previous bottom horse suddenly becomes the top horse. And a really bully after being bullied by the others for several years. Stuff is taught, yeah, but it's based on something hardwired. The hope would be that as humans we could overcome the hardwiring.
