and were in international waters waiting out a storm. Appears they aren't strangers transiting the straight. Was an article in www.gcaptain.com

MOSCOW, Nov 28 (Reuters) – A squadron of Russian warships entered the English Channel on Friday but a NATO official dismissed a Russian media report that they were there to conduct military exercises.

Russian news agency RIA quoted the Northern Fleet as saying its vessels, led by anti-submarine ship Severomorsk, had passed through the Strait of Dover and were now in international waters in the Seine Bay to wait for a storm to pass.

“While it is anchored the crew are undertaking a series of exercises on how to tackle infiltrating submarine forces and are training on survival techniques in the case of flooding or fire,” RIA quoted the Northern Fleet as saying in a statement.

The Russian navy could not reached for comment and the Defence Ministry declined to comment on the report.

Still go to cargolaw.com, but they haven't updated their photos in a couple of years. Their piracies reports and casualty reports are still pretty good though.

Sitting still or moving - Their still always targets. There's a popular joke among the submariner community that there are two types of ships - Submarines and targets.

As for the sailing through the channel. I'm sure it was meant as a message.

France with holds the release of the helicopter carrier "Mistral" to the Russian navy and the Russian's just happen to anchor some warships in French waters? lol
Unless you are in a harbor or protected bay you stay at sea in bad weather, you don't risk dragging anchor and going on the rocks.

In a statement released to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, the Russian Northern Fleet said that its vessels were led by the Severomorsk destroyer and were anchored in French waters waiting for a storm to pass.
The fleet is now north of the Normandy coast.
