What accounts for that straight line on the top where the blood isn't? Is that a bandage?

(16,327 posts)Remember that blood follows gravity. You can clearly see the 2 small wound areas and the blood flowing from those two wounds show he had his head face down at some point. Two neighbors said they saw him standing over Trayvon with his hand on his back -- his head is face down at that point and the blood is flowing down (gravity) but when he stands up it appears "horizontal" (the straight line everyone is seeing).

(11,065 posts)Even more so if the blood is a very thin layer... a smear of blood would appear a lighter brighter red than a thick drip trail for instance. I've noticed this in the bathroom when doctoring a shaving cut on my leg or something like that. It also looks much lighter and brighter when I'm directly under the bright bathroom ceiling light, which is why I do any doctoring there instead of over by the sink a step or two away. It's only a one-bulb fixture, and even one or two steps away the brightness from the bulb isn't nearly as strong.
The blood mixed with water would also thin it out and make it appear lighter and brighter. Since it was raining that night it could be that water from being rained on or having had his head wet from wet grass could make it look lighter and brighter. However, I think most of the lightness and brightness is because they aren't think blood drip trails and mostly because of the brightness of the camera flash. I do think that the blood is mixed with water because of the almost smear-like and very thin appearance of the blood trails. It looks very much like thin smear-like blood trails when I cut myself shaving and my leg is very wet from the shower.
I'm more interested in how the photo came to be. It seems odd to me that it was taken by police since their immediate action would have been to get him medical attention rather than take a photo. I also find it rather odd that some nosy neighbor came outside and took this deliberate posed photo of his head. But I can also see that Zimmerman would have wanted someone to take the photo for evidence and may even have asked someone to take the photo with his own cell phone camera.
