"Under God" added to the pledge as a Communist plot

Just when you think that the teabaggers can't get any stupider...

I actually heard this from a teabagger the other day. He claims that the words 'under God' were added to the Pledge of Allegiance as part of a Communist plot. The rational was to piss off enough people and galvanize socialists and communists against religion in this country. I tried to point out that this was added at the height of the anti-Communist furor, when McCarthyism was all the rage.

I asked if he thought that McCarthy was actually a Communist himself, and he actually replied "I dunno, he could have been. How do we know that he wasn't"

To which I replied, "How do you know that Obama isn't really a secret Conservative? After all, he's done a pretty good job of rallying the Tea Party against him."

His reply - 'Well that's just stupid'.

Oh, the irony, the stupidity...how do these people even function?

when Under God was inserted into the Pledge. I was in Catholic school at the time, and as I recall the nuns were not the least bit happy about it.

In recent years I don't do the Pledge at all. When you think about it, it's quite creepy to be swearing allegiance to the flag, rather than to the government or the Constitution or to our fellow citizens.

I was just a kid in school and attended church every Sunday. Today, I am an atheist and do not recite that part of the pledge.

Pledge was a Christian Socialist, named Francis Bellamy, a cousin of the famous socialist utopian novelist, Edward Bellamy.
