I know this isn't a typical GD topic but please indulge me.
There was a slope I usually walk down without any problem but on this morning six or so weeks ago it was wet... I broke my fall with my right hand. I was scared to look at it because I thought I scraped all the skin off it...In fact I was fine or so I thought. I said to myself "wow, this is a miracle I didn't break something." Low and behold about four weeks ago my elbow starts to hurt more and more and I can't move it as much as normal. I call my doctor and I can't get an appointment for two weeks. So I go to the emergency room on 11/11 where I'm diagnosed with a non displaced fracture of the proximal radius and put in a splint and referred to an orthopedist. The orthopedist removed the splint on 11/19 and took an xray. He said the fracture was very small however I couldn't complete the range of motion movements he had me do and still had pain. He said to come back 12/18 and to get physical therapy which I'm waiting on.
I have been doing a lot of stretching exercises without weight in the interim but it still hurts, especially at night, and while I have more range of motion than when the splint came off it's still not normal.
The discharge instructions said this type of injury takes six to eight weeks to heal so maybe I am on track after all...
BTW, I have always worked out but since I can't work my arms with weights I'm doing a lot of cardio (stationary bike)

(15,396 posts)It almost caused her to lose her job as an RN. She was out of work over 8 weeks, they did manage to find her a short term position in the hospital laundry until she could resume her nursing duties.

(99,710 posts)My friend who is a physical therapist confirmed it.
I googled it and with everything the research suggests it may interfere with the healing process but the results are inconclusive.
I wasn't taking a lot to begin with because I am aware of the dangers of NSAIDS. Maybe 400 milligrams a day...Some people take 1,200 milligrams or more...
It's my elbow, my pain...If the pain becomes unbearable I take one...
It sucks but at least the splint is off... I am learning to be ambidextrous. It's a good thing...You eat slower..

(99,710 posts)But my buddy, the physical therapist, said to try heat since I'm in the sub acute stage.
At this very moment the pain is about a 2 on a scale of 1 -10 with ten being the worst so I can forget about the pain and the range of motion while not normal is close. I could live with this but at night it really hurts , stiffens ups, and affects my sleep.
Oh well...
TY for your concern.

(14 posts)I tripped on a curb and caught myself with my arm hyperextended. I didn't feel any pain at first but about an hour later I started getting shooting pains when I moved my arm even slightly. It was like I was hitting a nerve and you could even see my arm twitch if I moved it. I just took ibuprofen and it started to feel better over the next few weeks but I still couldn't straighten it. So I went to have an X-ray done and they told me it was fractured and that it should heal on it's own. They did suggest I wear a tennis elbow brace, but it caused pain even though I was able to straighten it with that on. And I don't know if this will be the case with you but she also held my arm (all the way around) just below the elbow (where the tennis elbow brace goes) and when she did that I was able to straighten it which made me feel much better about it. After a few more weeks I was able to straighten it again without any therapy. I hope this helps and good luck with the healing.

(17,651 posts)Fractured radial head and neck but didn't know it. Hadn't even realized I hit my elbow at the time of the accident. No xray nor treatment for several weeks until pain became unrelenting, unbearable and I was referred to an orthopedist who found the break and cartilage damage.
My Mom was living with us and I was the primary caretaker so lots of heavy lifting, bending and stretching, even had it lock up several times due to pieces of cartilage breaking off.
Had PT for several weeks and regained nearly full ROM but it still causes me lots of pain on a routine basis and I think the damage is permanent.
I wolfed down whatever I could get my hands on and still do and my drug of choice was Aleve and occasionally prescription Mobic, ice, heat and bengay.
So sorry it happened to you, wishing you complete healing with no lasting problems.
