Do you remember the first time you smoked marijuana??

I grew up in the mountains of Kentucky and had never seen a marijuana cigarette until I arrived in Vietnam in September of 1967. I had been in country for about 3 days and was sent on a detail with 2 other GIs to help put some concertina wire around the north end of this little village. We were told that a truck would pick us up later in the evening. (Concertina wire was nothing but barbed wire stretched out like a huge slinky)

No sooner than the truck had left and the other two GIs lit up a joint. Then they started laughing. They offered it to me but I refused because I was afraid it might make me forget where I was and I would get killed or I would get hooked on drugs? I had read about the terrible effects of marijuana in my high school health class.

The other GIs had been in the country for a while and they kept smoking and laughing while I tried to get some work accomplished. Needless to say, I succumbed to the peer pressure and when we were picked up later in the day, very little work had been done.

I had many adventures with marijuana through the years - enough stories to probably write a book? But I was never busted.

Now, I live in Colorado and I am a patient in the Medical Marijuana program. I can get weed anytime I want it. I can buy as little as a gram for $5 or $6 dollars.

But strangely, I smoke less now than anytime in my life. I never became hooked and I do not have a craving for it. I smoke it as much for my spiritual health as for my medical conditions. That's 47 years and I am still tokin'....

I doubt that I would ever have smoked it or been around it? However, I do believe Vietnam was the reason we had such a terrible drug epidemic in some parts of this country and why we had the "war on drugs". It was the misguided decision to go into Vietnam that led to Woodstock and the peace movement and much of the drug and homeless problems in this country, in my opinion.

Then 27th birthday - a friend who had a "source" shared some THC with me. Then we went out to eat and I had an Irish Coffee on the house as the birthday girl. I was feelin' good on the way home. The next day I retched my guts out. Nothing since then.

WHOA that first time was a duzy. I was 13 at the time. It completely warped my sense of time, distance, and perception. I remember walking uphill and feeling like I was not getting any closer to the top which I could see. Seconds felt like minutes, and the stars in the night sky were slowly moving, like swirling a bit. Oddly enough, this was the one and only time mj has given me a somewhat psychedelic high. It's just been all zen since then. I'm 33 and vape mj every night after work since Im 15.

13. I got hooked on a more powerful drug
Sun Nov 30, 2014, 09:23 PM
Nov 2014

I was already deep on the way to full blown alcoholism in high school...then I started smoking pot and pretty much stopped drinking. I used marijuana more or less daily all the way through college. Always got good grades, never wrecked a car or got in a fight or passed out on somebody's lawn. A few years after college I'd mostly lost touch with the connections I used to have to get pot, and my drinking resumed.

Within a couple years of quitting pot and resuming drinking, I'd been fired twice, arrested twice, evicted from my apartment and just about at rock bottom. I was only 26. Even then, it took me another 4 years of misery before I quit drinking.

I've never understood the panic parents have that their kids might go off to college and "experiment" with marijuana...yet they have no problem with feeding the kids a drink or two when they come home on break. In my sex-drugs-and rock n' roll days I tried just about every drug I could get my hands on. Not one of them was -- for me anyway -- as powerful or as life-destroying as alcohol.

I'm glad this country is finally coming to it's senses on the subject of marijuana. Never thought I'd live to see the day.

Mainly because it did nothing for me. I tried it, and didn't feel "high" at all. Or much of anything.

When I had to go to a doctor for a different problem years later, he gave me a prescription of a certain drug that was supposed to be effective for my condition. And that is the only time I have felt a mental type effect, it kept me awake for two days, I could not sleep, and made me so hyper, my mind felt like it was racing 1000 miles per hour. I told the doctor when I saw him again that if I had ever taken speed, then this is probably what it would have felt like. He then said I was part of a tiny percentage who had a reaction to the drug.

I always liked it, never abused it, could go years without it, and frankly, can't wait until it's legal after reading some of the posts here. Apparently, as it BECOMES legal, you know what the hell type of high you can expect.

I'd say some here had some pretty shitty experiences, which is too bad, because unless it's stepped on or you combine things like poisonous alcohol, you should not have that type of experience.

26. I grew up in a planned suburban community (read: Orwellian nightmare).
Sun Nov 30, 2014, 09:43 PM
Nov 2014

The first time I smoked weed was between the fence of someone's backyard and a bunch of manicured shrubberies facing the road.

I was 13, in 1996. It was me and two other guys who I considered my friends, although I don't think they thought much of me.

We had this metallic purple anodized aluminum pipe piece. I was on antidepressants at the time (a staple of the Orwellian suburbs), and wasn't aware of the fact that antidepressants and dopamine-enhancing compounds like THC would massively multiply each other.

Since it was only a pipe piece and not a full pipe, it got hot very fast and burned my lips a little. But I was 13, so even that seemed cool.

At first, it was fun because it was new and "bad." Then it was like the world started expanding - little things looked big. I said these exact words... "Everytime I look at the plants..." and said nothing more, because the waist-high shrubberies around us expanded into a mystical forest. The weed wasn't laced with anything - it was just hugely enhanced by my antidepressants. They chuckled at my sentence fragment, and we parted company.

I started walking home down the cul-de-sac suburban street. As I walked, reality contracted down to a single keyhole point...and ended, for just a moment. I woke up still in the midst of walking, and the world was utterly different. Every moment was an isolated slate of experiences, quickly replaced by another. I was in a dream, but not a dream. I was terrified, and elated. The sky was an indigo infinity. Other people in the distance walked by, but they repeated in loop. In rational terms I now knew that this was what marijuana was, but I wished I hadn't smoked it. My heart felt like it struggled to beat, and I was terrified that it would stop.

When I went home, I was terrified that someone would know, but nobody gave any sign. I crashed on my bed hoping to fall asleep so that it would be over, and eventually it was. But ever since the world was changed.

I know there was a couple times I smoked what had to be some ditch weed because I didn't get high.

When I finally did get stoned on it, I remember a bunch of us sitting around a campfire talking shit and me telling the story of the first time i actually got high, which was on Vicks Formula 44D. I was 13 and we were in Boston July 4, 1976 for the Bicentennial. I had a terrible cough and my mom bought me a bottle of 44D. Every time I coughed I took a sip out of that bottle. Before I knew it I was flying. What a great time that was too, the family together and getting along for once, Boston all decked out for the Bicentennial and me stoned on Vicks 44D...

Back in grad school, when my friends did it, I severely disapproved. Not sure why now since I no longer really care what people do at home or elsewhere. I think I was mostly afraid of getting in trouble. I think I still am, which accounts for most of why I haven't.

I also would be terrified of trying to acquire it, knowing it would be my luck I'd end up buying it from an undercover cop or something.

That sort of thing would cause me to lose my job. So it isn't at the moment worth the risk, until the rest of the country is like Colorado.

wait for them to turn green.

Do you think anyone ever said to anybody, "I'm bored. Whata you guys say we go over to George Bush's dorm and get stoned with him.

I remember a cartoon from the late 60s showing to burly GIs standing in a jungle in the rain, wearing pomchos with 3 day beards. One saying, "I smoked Maurajauna once. It made me want to rape and kill."

I smoked for the first time with a guy from St Louis and a girl from Illinois in the deserted college baseball stands in Beaumont Texas.

We were getting ripped off by being charged $10 for a match box of pot.

Went to the student union after the munchies set in and the vending machine had cubicles with food that rotated when you pushed the button. I rotated the cubicles for 10 minutes before it dawned on me that there was only a certain number of cubicles.

Good times. But pot then was really weak compared to what's available now. The best available then was called Acapulco Gold.

I know people who have, I've had a number of people ask me to hook them up with some, but I've just never had the interest in getting stoned and I hate the thought of inhaling smoke of any sort.

To many people I know who do smoke regularly aren't people I want to be in that they seem to be slackers who do not much but smoke and meander through life. I'm sure it's at least partially biased by the fact that they smoked regularly enough that I knew, where as those who may smoke in a more recreational fashion don't always advertise it as I've known people who only smoked on vacation all lived perfectly normal lives where they didn't have their lives taken over by pot.

I can't say that I wouldn't be tempted to intake a non-inhaled version if I ever developed something like glaucoma or cancer, but I don't think I could ever get past the idea of inhaling smoke.

When I first moved out of living with my parents, the roommate I moved in with smoked weed before and after work.
I would smell it every morning and night.
One evening, he had a friend over, and they invited me to smoke it.
We sat at the small breakfast nook in our kitchen, and were laughing at the stupidest things.
It was awesome! I still giggle at the things we found funny.

The following night they invited me again, but it was really strong stuff and gave me a panic attack. I haven't tried it since.

I had never tried it or had never even been exposed to it prior. I was at Cu Chi, and it was night time at the bunker. A fellow grunt offered me a Marlboro with the tobacco rolled out, filled with MaryJane. I smoked it with him/them, and I was so paranoid that we were going to be hit by the VC that night. I remember walking from the bunker to my barracks and being blown away by how far it was, and how slowly I was walking. I survived. I smoked MANY times in Nam after that night, and had some of the most fun with my buddies, laughing and talking each other on adventures sliding down mountains of ice cream sundaes, etc. totally awesome experience.

Got blown up walking point some months later. At the time we had just left a village that was responsible for killing the platoon's sergeant a few weeks before I entered country. We were pretty angry with them, and we destroyed a lot of their rice, belongings, etc. I found a whole mountain of weed over a bunker they had in one of the hootches, and I stuffed an empty sand bag full to take back to the perimeter to share with my buddies that night. Didn't make it. My radio man walked in front of me when the C O radioed up to us to lead off the dirt road into the bush. My radio man froze and said, "God, I just stepped on a trip wire." BOOM! I remember throwing the weed away from me when they loaded me on the stretcher and carried me to the chopper.

Later that fall, maybe around November, I remember the mailman delivering a small package to the front door, about 10x6x4 inches, LOADED with nothing but fine weed. "Thanks buddies!" I was home and turned on some of my old school buddies, and we lived happily ever after.

I eventually became an elementary school teacher, gave up the weed cause it made me paranoid and confused, and I didn't smoke for the next 35 years.

I recently tried a joint with a friend, and it reminded me of how I would think EVERYONE knows I'm loaded. Still get paranoid, but I like the hours and days after getting high. It "grounds me", and helps me to focus on the parts of life that really matter. I wish everyone could experience that feeling. I even grew a beautiful plant in my back yard a couple years ago, but pulled it out a little early cause I didn't want my neighbor to see it growing. I have some with me now and will probably toke a smoke after my dental appointment tomorrow.

I'm thrilled the country is finally waking up to the fact it is NOT the dangerous drug they have been lying to us about for the last 60 years. Safer than alcohol any day, and some folks would really benefit from a smoke now and then. The world could be a much better place.

That's my story. No regrets. Wish I could say the same about booze. I'm damned lucky to be alive today with some of the drunken stupid-ness I survived. Damn good thing I didn't kill somebody else too. Worry about booze; leave Mary alone!

I can understand why some don't want smoke in their lungs. But there are differences. I would partake whenever a joint was passed around, never had a bad reaction. One time, one of my friends pulled a prank on me. They took a filterless cigarette and made it appear as a joint. Just one puff and I broke into a caughing fit. I told them the joke was on them if they couldn't see that tobacco was a killer.

After that first time I would have deeply profound spiritual experiences while smoking. Like seeing gods truth as I was driving down a hill, the top of my head came off and I became one with the universe during a Bob Marley concert, walking through a wheat field which was a moving piece of golden art and I could draw for hours.

Now, it is just too dang strong to enjoy anything or to have spiritual or creative experiences. Anybody know where to get good old-fashioned regular green pot anymore?

However, drugs are a whole different ball game when you have to take them in order to function. I've been on narcs or semisynthetics for 20+ years. I lobbied to get on Tramadol because I loathe the narcotic buzz, it just gets in the way.

I would love to get MMJ but you have to have one foot in the grave to get it in NM, even though the law has been on the books since the 1970s.

The summer after my father died. I'd been a good little girl until then but probably figured, what the fuck? And tried it. Didn't get high that first time. Can't say why I tried it again, but I did. Been smoking now for... 34 years, on and off. Never liked getting blasted on it, just as I've never liked getting falling down drunk. I learned pretty early that one or two hits got me plenty high to enjoy the buzz but not so incapacitated that I couldn't carry on a conversation with a straight person. Also, you can really only smoke once a day, you never seem to get the same high the second time, it's like chasing wind to even try. So I take a hit after work like other people drink a glass of wine. I can't figure out why more people haven't figured these things out.

That so many DUers have never tried it??

Or maybe they just don't want to admit it??

For me, it was a step in becoming more politically enlightened and aware of the problems of the world. It permitted me to have a spiritual awakening which I probably would never have experienced if I had stayed sober, or worse, turned to alcohol for escape.

But everyone needs to march to their own drummer...

I was a freshman in college in 1965 UNIV of Tx, Austin. The boy I was dating and a bunch of our male friends lived in a house about 10 blocks from campus. We sat on couches and chairs around the living room and passed Js around to the music of Dylan's "Rainy Day Women," Mother's of Invention "Suzy Cream Cheese" and "Don't Bogart that Joint," and the Loving Spoonful. On the wall were large drawings of cockroaches with slogan, "the meek shall inherit the world."

Great times. Some of the happiest days of my life. Now in my dottering old age (I'm 67), I have my own secret garden.

All of us were sitting in a circle on the floor and a pipe was being passed around. There was a knock at the door and I started to feel paranoid even before the lawyer-to-be opened it. The person knocking was a former STUDENT of mine. She came in, asked for matches and casually looked around the group, but didn't say anything to me before she left. I didn't know what to do, so didn't do anything but just sit there waiting for the police to arrive.

About a 1/2 hour later there was another knock. I actually had the pipe in my hand when that happened so I slid the pipe behind me under the couch and tried to look innocent. I thought my heart would beat out of my chest. The lawyer-to-be invited the former student in again as well as another person who just happened to be a CURRENT student. They came in and joined the circle across from me. By now everyone was looking for the pipe and I reluctantly pulled it out from behind me, passed it to the next person and began making plans to go back to my apartment where I knew I would be arrested. The students only stayed for a few minutes and I left a few minutes after they did.

Now this happened on a Friday night. All weekend I waited and waited. I knew I was going to be arrested and fired from my job.

But Monday morning arrived and now I had a new fear - what was going to happen when my student came to class? He was late to class most of the time, sat in the back and pretty much quietly ignored what was going on in class.. But this day he got to class early, walked up to the front and sat directly in front of me. Every Monday I ALWAYS started the class by asking what they did over the weekend, so I knew I had to ask the same question this day because the students expected it. Several students raised their hands as did you-know-who. He kept his hand up while a couple of the others answered the question. By now the class is wondering what the heck is going on because he had never volunteered an answer before. Those students who had wanted to answer put their hands back down and his was still up so I called on him. To everyone's surprise, including mine, he said in perfect French that he had had a really bad argument with his father and then went with a friend to a party and had a good time.

After class he came up to me and said that he didn't know that teachers could be real people too. He continued to participate in class and I have stopped at his place of business a few times over the years.

I did not smoke pot again!!! Today I am a medical marijuana patient and have been since April. I still don't smoke as I prefer edibles.

I had already been hanging around people that smoked for about a year. I told them I wasn't ready and they din't push.

On a summer night in June I was at a girlfriend's house. I decided that night would be the night. We smoked a joint, my first but certainly not last. What I discovered, was that pot slowed me down to almost normal. For a very hyper person, this was a fabulous find! It also was an answer to my chronic insomnia.

I continued to smoke until I moved cross country and lost my connection. For the next several years, I smoked only very occasionally.

Then I was injured (TBI, paralyzed). For a number of years I listened to the doctors like a good patient and took the chemicals they told me would help my pain. But they din't do shit for the pain and, in fact made my health worse. At my wits end, I decide to try pot again. My body is very glad I did.

I've smoked every night since 2005 and supplement it with a glorious substance which I call my Love Potion (Cannabis oil).

I do not get high. It is my medicine .

And on November 4, 2014 it became legal in my state of Oregon.

I took a few hits off a blunt and felt really, really good (if a little spacey) afterwards. I've been smoking the stuff on a regular basis for over a decade now, and while I've dabbled (and then some) in plenty of other substances, Mary Jane and I seem somehow uniquely compatible. A few beers and a few bong hits are just about the perfect combination IMO.

Grew up in a small southern Illinois town and heard of marijuana but never had the opportunity to try it. I met a cute college girl on Jacksonville Beach. She lit up a joint and passed it to me. I remember telling her that I never tried it before. She told me to take a deep drag and hold it as long as I could. I coughed something horrible, but I did feel mellow and peaceful. I didn't even know I was high. I thought I would see hallucinations, lol.

I know no one is going to believe this but I was 12. My friend and I were walking home from school and there was a car kind of parked in a driveway but it was blocking the sidewalk where we were walking. The car had 2 or 3 older guys in it and they asked us if we wanted to smoke a joint. I was smoking a cigarette (yes, at 12 -- my insane mother condoned it -- don't ask) and both my friend and I said, "Sure!" We took a couple of hits, talked to them for a minute or two and went on our way. I didn't feel a thing so I'm thinking it was probably some pretty bunk weed. Anyway, I'm 59 and I've been smoking the ganja ever since. I did quit smoking though.

The absolute BEST ganja I ever had was from Kentucky, btw. It was probably around 1975 and it was something called River Road Red. I was dazed and confused for a good 6 hours. I don't know what the hell is in the soil in Kentucky but if that's a sample of what you guys could grow you should legalize it, sell it and tax it.

Drunk people have generally supported the incarceration of millions of American's, the destruction of millions of American families, and continue to believe the lies used to brain wash them.
I am also a Colorado resident and for the first time in my life I can be free to pursue my personal choice of happiness as guaranteed in our Bill of Rights.
I only hope that one day all citizens of our nation enjoy this freedom.

I am pretty sure it was somebody's homegrown male culls but I am not sure.
for sure it was pre-high-school. the grade school I went to had a bit of a reputation back then

I am so old that the guys you thought would be in prison for smuggling are now legal growers. Life is a Trip!

I can barely handle it, or even much alcohol any more, but enjoy all on occasion. I do want to do a road trip up to Colorado as I am not sure how long it will be before AZ progresses beyond medical. I have always had the dream and thought it should be legal to smoke weed, and considered the prohibition to be ridiculous. I am pretty proud of the folks here for at least getting to that point considering how backwards we can be/are about a lot of important issues.

Pot's never really done much for me, personally, except make me squint and give me munchies. I get a better high from chewing tobacco. Come to think of it, maybe I should try "chewing weed" or something like that.

Visiting a cousin who was a student at Tuskegee at the time...There was this big apartment and a huge circle of about 15 dudes sitting around puffing and passing...

I remember because after I was high enough, the most urgent, pressing (and funny) thought in my mind was to leave the apartment and get back to my grandmother's house to watch Monday Night Football (Panthers-Cowboys)...It was the 2nd quarter when I got back, and thank god my grandmother's house was only 2-3 miles from campus, because trying to drive home was an adventure in itself...I cleaned out half of my grandmother's fridge, and watched one of the funniest NFL games and some of the funniest commercials I had ever seen...

These days, I don't know what kind of shit I'm smoking with my current friends, because it never gets me *LOLZ high* anymore...Reefer seems to be much more of a nerve calming depressant for me now (Guess I need to finally educate myself on the different strains and effects, because I really miss that 'high' feeling)

laughing out of control. I had a very young baby then and I was afraid he'd wake up and I wouldn't be able to deal very well. To this day, I only toke when I'm relatively sure that I won't need to function.

Do people still laugh the whacky laugh-for-no-apparent-reason? I don't know if that's an initial reaction or if the strains are different and not laugh-inducing.

so I was always surrounded by it -- I vividly recall a big paper grocery bag of the shit sitting in the living room ready to be weighed ino baggies and thinking that was normal, like furniture.

But something about that ubiquity, and seeing the endless procession of stoners coming in to buy it, and smelling that goddamned headachy reek of smoke, and all the idiotic rituals surrounding its use made me hate it, and I've never once touched it (or any other drug) despite having infinite opportunity as a teen.
