Whistleblower Edward Snowden received several standing ovations in the Swedish parliament after being given the Right Livelihood award for his revelations of the scale of state surveillance.
Snowden, who is in exile in Russia, addressed the parliament by video from Moscow. In a symbolic gesture, his family and supporters said no one picked up the award on his behalf in the hope that one day he might be free to travel to Sweden to receive it in person.
His father, Lon, who was in the chamber for what was an emotional ceremony, said: I am thankful for the support of the Right Livelihood award and the Swedish parliament. The award will remain here in expectation that some time sooner or later he will come to Stockholm to accept the award.

(55,745 posts)IT'S SPELLED OUT IN THE FIRST WORDS IN THE FIRST SENTENCE OF THE CONSTITUTION, WHAT'S SUPPOSED TO BE THE HIGHEST LAW OF THE LAND:
"We the People." That's as clear as it gets. In the USA, government is supposed to be We the People.
Democracy is government of the People, by the People and for the People. Wouldn't know it, these days.
Nowadays, secret agents in government monitor what I know, who I know, what I write, who I communicate with, and what my politics are, among other things.
Why would they want to take the "risk" out of Democracy? Don't they trust We the People?

Did the Russians ever give him an award for anything? Or would that be too obvious?
And do the Swedes mail the award to Snowden? Does he send somebody to pick it up? Or is it sent directly to Greenwald?

Besides, I thought he was perfectly happy living in Moscow? Isn't that what the photo ops with the girlfriend were supposed to illustrate?

However I understand that for a certain number of people, anything to do with Snowden is bad and will be bad whether you actually read the story or not...
