Oh my God, are you serious? Garners widow, Esaw Garner, told The Daily News about the grand jurys decision not to charge Officer Daniel Pantaleo. You can see in the video that he (the cop) was dead wrong! There had been warnings earlier that a decision not to indict the white policeman with a crime for killing a black man would fan tensions.
Eric Garners widow reacted with dismay Wednesday after a Staten Island grand jury chose not to indict the NYPD officer who killed her husband with a chokehold.
Oh my God, are you serious? Esaw Garner, her voice rising in shock and anger, told The Daily News. Im very disappointed. You can see in the video that he (the cop) was dead wrong!
Garner was referring to the shocking cellphone video first published on NYDailyNews.com that showed Officer Daniel Pantaleo placing Garner in a chokehold a move banned by the NYPD and wrestling him to the ground.
The grand jury kept interviewing witnesses but you didn't need witnesses, the anguished widow said. You can be a witness for yourself. Oh my God, this s--- is crazy.
Esaw Garner said she is now placing her hopes for justice with the U.S. Department of Justice.

(31,849 posts)what, exactly, will it take for a GJ of a major metropolitan area to issue an indictment of a cop?
Apparently, clear video with clear audio, isn't enough.
hootinholler
(26,449 posts)That's all it will take, but that is also something you probably won't find. The prosecutor cop relationship is too close. Without the support of the police department, the prosecutor is out of luck, therefore they act more as a defense counsel than a prosecutor. There should be prosecutors who's only job is going after bad cops (and others in the judicial system).

http://www.myfoxdetroit.com/story/22506492/watch-first-48-video-shows-police-raid-that-led-to-aiyana-stanley-jones-death
Officer Joseph Weekley was charged in connection with Jones' death. In October 2011, Weekley was charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless endangerment with a gun. Weekley's first trial ended in a mistrial in June 2013.[6]
Weekley's retrial began in September 2014. On October 3, the judge dismissed the involuntary manslaughter charge against Weekley, leaving him on trial for only one charge: recklessly discharging a firearm.[7][8][9]
On October 10, the second trial ended in an another mistrial.[10][11]

It's absolutely shameful.
It would not have happened in any other borough of the city with Democratic DAs that are accountable to large numbers of people of color.
Again, it's shameful.

(14,040 posts)Do you think body cameras in Ferguson or in Ohio would make a difference in the grand jury decision? They wouldn't have because if the prosecutor doesn't actually do his or her job, it doesn't matter if all the jurors had ringside seats.
brush
(53,871 posts)Body cams can contribute to what is known about police excessive force.
The next thing we have to do is go after these racist DAs who don't aggressively seek indictments from the grand juries.
They are the ones with the power after the killings. If they don't use it to go after justice we need to recall their asses pronto.
Either that or laws that call for special prosecutors in police crime cases as the current DA/police connection is too buddy-buddy for the prosecutors to aggressively go for indictments against cops they work with everyday.
justiceischeap
(14,040 posts)Intellectually, I can see the conundrum for local prosecutors. I think if there's a questionable police involved death, the U.S. Attorney should immediately be assigned the case and the grand jury that's empaneled shouldn't be from that immediate area.
I'm not against body cameras but I fear that they'll only be used to create federally funded snuff films.

(53,871 posts)Staten Island has long been a virtually segregated borough where until recently, blacks were only allowed to live on the north shore.
It's isolation, connected to the rest of the city only by the Verranzano Bridge and the Staten Island Ferry, seems to have helped the racists to operate with impunity. It's also much less diverse than the rest of the city 80% to 20% minority.
It would fit in very comfortably in the old South.

jtuck004
(15,882 posts)It's not the lack of opportunity, it must be the drugs that is making them "that way". Attributing their behavior to something more socially acceptable.
Simple fact is most of these people aren't raging on drugs. Not only is there little evidence, but doctors face a liability when they prescribe such things - they must give patients urine tests and if the levels get out of whack they could be liable. So it's not as common as people would like to think - but it's easier than thinking one is paying a racist police force to do these things, eh? But that is exactly what is going on, because most white folk are still just as racist as they ever have been.
Wouldn't hurt to test, but it won't do anything much to fix the problem, because without steroids they would still hate just as much.

The ruling elite are losing control and so they create fear and violence to terrorize people into obedience. They create stupid Obey hats and shirts that they market as the newest cool thing to kids. It's the ruling monsters of terror who are creating all this hatred, killing, violence, addiction, disease for in many many ways they profit from this. This is the only way they know is profit. They know nothing of compassion and humanity. They want their police mob to be just like them, violent, abusive, conniving, hateful and without care.

(21,925 posts)What would a policeman have to do to get indicted? I don't have an answer as it now appears there is no answer. We're not talking about a guilty verdict from a jury, but just a decision by the grand jury to send a case to trial where a jury can hear the evidence and determine whether a crime was committed and what crime was committed.

What I don't understand is if a small town Chief can be that on the ball with a small budget...wtf is up with huge metro PDs that have millions to spend?
Good cops better start standing up to these bad ones or they are going to lose respect via guilt by association. This really pisses me off...I am pro law enforcement, but the non ending stories of cop abuse is really getting to me.

I think these types of criminal acts by police are pushing people closer to armed insurrection. You can push the people just so far. They're not giving the people the option of not using force, as the law isn't working. And they're not even letting people peacefully protest. And I don't say that lightly because I've never been violent, I abhor violence, and my philosophy very much is one of 'live and let live'.
