CNN Poll: Majority of Americans say things are going wellBy Alexandra Jaffe, CNN

"SNIP...........................
Washington (CNN) -- For the first time since 2007, a majority of Americans think things are going well in the nation, a new CNN/ORC International poll found.
It's a slim majority just 52 percent of Americans said things are going well, while 48 percent said things are going badly but it's the most positive appraisal of the state of the nation that the poll has found since January of 2007.
And it marks consistent improvement in the mood of the nation over the past few months, despite a series of national security crises and continued gridlock in Washington. In September, 50 percent of respondents said things were going well.
Economic sentiments have improved over the past year as well. Though just one-third of Americans believe the nation's economy is starting to recover, that marks an 8-point increase from a year ago, when 24 percent said the same.

Funny how that works. The media wouldn't have an agenda, would they?

(14,733 posts)but more than half think things are 'going well'?
Sounds like they polled some people with cognitive dissonance issues.

(14,733 posts)I always expect ridiculous statements to be coming, so the fact that something like 12% of people think it's too high but don't think it should be reduced is all that shocking. The ridiculous part is that most of those people who think it's too high actually think it's a significant percentage of the national budget. Personally, I'd reallocate and maybe even expand. If we spent more building overseas, we could potentially end up needing far less military presence overseas. People who are content with their lives don't generally want to 'rock the boat', and are going to support 'terrorists' far less than those living in dire straits, with no sense that things are getting any better.

(1,186 posts)People with land lines have homes, jobs, somewhat of a stable life. Poll people with cell phones I'd almost guarantee you the results would be different. I have a land line and a cell phone and I'd be the first one to tell you this country is going to hell in a fast tracked hand basket.

(56,582 posts)ORC International on November 21-23, 2014. The margin of
sampling error for results based on the total sample is plus or
minus 3 percentage points.
The sample includes 692 interviews among landline respondents
and 353 interviews among cell phone respondents.

(1,186 posts)That poll is not skewed in any way. Totally reputable. I stand by my statement.

(56,582 posts)And I think you're vastly overestimating the number of people who have cut the landline, though you have a lot of company in that.
It's only relatively recently that access to a stable cell phone number didn't require credit...

And according to this article 40% of US homes don't have a land line.

IMO land lines skew older, whiter, more conservative people. If I was ever to hit the skids in life the last thing I would give up is a cell phone. So again I stand by my statement.
