White Phoenix police officer shoots and kills unarmed black man

A white Phoenix police officer shot and killed an unarmed black suspect he believed was reaching for a gun on Tuesday night, adding to a series of fatal clashes between police and civilians that has led to unrest throughout the country.

An officer was responding to reports of drug activity when he encountered Rumain Brisbon, 34, who witnesses said was selling narcotics from a parked car, according to a Phoenix police statement.

The officer ordered Brisbon several times to show his hands, but Brisbon placed his hands near his waistband, prompting the officer to draw his weapon, the statement read.

Brisbon ran from his car toward an apartment complex, and the officer again ordered him to surrender, according to police. Several witnesses told police Brisbon ignored the officer's orders and repeatedly screamed profanities, according to the statement.

The officer and Brisbon engaged in a struggle that spilled into a nearby apartment, and Brisbon put his hand in his pocket. As they struggled, the officer "believed he felt the handle of a gun while holding the suspect's hand in his pocket," the statement read.

Marci Kratter, an attorney who previously represented Brisbon and is now working with his relatives, told the Arizona Republic she had found several witnesses in the apartment complex who dispute the police account of the shooting.

Differing accounts of deadly police shooting emerge
For the 19th time this year, a Phoenix police officer has opened fire on a suspect. The latest shooting resulted in the death of an unarmed man, but police say there's much more to the story.

It began Tuesday night when police says two people reported drug deals taking place out of an SUV near Interstate 17 and Greenway Road. That's what led the unidentified 30-year-old officer to zero in on the SUV that Rumain Brisbon, 34, had parked in an apartment complex.

Civil rights activists, clergy and community members gathered at Civic Space Park at around 8 p.m.

We are worried, we're concerned, and we're upset, and our trust is not there," said Dr. Ann Hart, chairperson of the African American Advisory Committee to the Phoenix Police Department in the South Mountain area. "We don't want to be a replication of anything that's happened in other cities like New York City, Ohio, Chicago and Ferguson."

Protestors also to march on Phoenix police headquarters, blocking Washington Street, as they demanded answers, including the name and background of the officer involved.

Rumain Brisbon, 34, was killed Tuesday night in north Phoenix during a struggle with a police officer outside an apartment complex at 15449 N. 25th Ave.

"This is a loss that we are going to have to figure out how to get through for the rest of our life without him," Brisbon's mother said at the rally. "Every breath that I take right now is for him."
