I've lived in many areas of the country. We moved a lot.

New Jersey (Central) - Two very bad encounters.
Georgia (North East of Atlanta out in the sticks) - Did not have a bad encounter.
Illinois (Chicago) - Really bad. We lived in project housing. It was almost a daily event. There was also a short period where there were apartment sweeps (basically the police came in and searched the apartment for guns) from time to time, and these were very tense.
California (Sacramento) - One scary ass encounter.
Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) - Bad. My car is too nice for the neighborhood.
Pennsylvania (20 miles north of Philly) - Have yet to have a bad encounter.

As a white boy I have NOT escaped having several negative encounters with the police. Heck, I had one before I was 25 years old, doing nothing more than walking down the sidewalk.

I've found that it is different in every area. Basically it is the attitude of the police/department. Some are good, some are bad, and a few are really friggin bad.

Their defense was identifying with their oppressors, not just the police.
