Call it the tale of the texts.
An interim report from a panel investigating last years George Washington Bridge lane closures scandal said today there is no conclusive evidence New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was aware of the lane closures either in advance of their implementation or contemporaneously as they were occurring.
But here's the catch: The report does not fully exonerate the possible 2016 Republican presidential candidate.
The biggest inconsistency in the report from previous sworn testimony found 12 text messages exchanged between Christie and a close aide, Regina Egea, during a day officials from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey were testifying about the scandal last year two months after the lane closures. The report states Christie initiated the texts, possibly contradicting the governor who repeatedly said he had not paid much attention to the scandal as it unfolded last fall.
Team Christie greeted the report as an exoneration, while Democrats said it proves nothing.
The scandal erupted in January when e-mails between a Christie aide and a Christie ally at the Port Authority revealed two of three access lanes to the George Washington Bridge, the world's busiest, were closed due to likely political motivation, possibly because the Democratic mayor of Fort Lee did not endorse Christie in his 2013 re-election bid. The gridlock paralyzed the New Jersey town for four days in September.

Putting politics ahead of the people (and pigs), New Jersey governor Chris Christie has vetoed a bill that would have effectively banned gestation crates and required hog farmers to give animals at least enough room to turn around and lie down comfortably. It was a modest measure that passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in both branches of the state legislature.
-snip-
Then why did Christie veto the bill?
It turns out that Christies presidential aspirations were behind his latest act of corruption. According to MSNBC and the Daily Show, Christies primary concern was appeasing Iowa factory farmers in hopes of getting their support for his bid to be president. After all, the Iowa caucus helps determine which nominee will become the Republican Partys chosen candidate. Unfortunately, mother pigs in New Jersey now have to pay the price.

(2,419 posts)and this report is far from an exoneration. In fact there's some pretty damaging items in the report. It's only the inability of the committee to get testimony from the key witnesses due to the criminal investigation that has saved him so far. The real action is at the U.S. Attorney's office. In fact there was a report that indictments are imminent just last night. http://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/George-Washington-Bridge-Traffic-Jam-Fort-Lee-Chris-Christie-New-Jersey-Indictment-Port-Authority-284905201.html
The interim report did have these tid bits:
There was no bona fide traffic study, Baroni lied in his testimony to the committee, Bridget Kelly is probably guilty of witness tampering, the traffic jam was for the purpose of retribution, Christie's office responded to the complaints from Fort Lee in an intentionally slow manner, and the best they can say is that Christie probably knew about the GWB on September 11 while it was still going on, but they can't be sure because they can't question Wildstein.
The abuse of the Port Authority, the misuse of Sandy funds and the Hoboken shakedown are far more serious anyway.
You may be right, he may skate, but road to being cleared isn't as smooth as Christie and his supporters would like people to believe.

(297,341 posts)We know today what we knew almost a year ago: Chris Christie created the culture within his administration that led to Bridgegate, DNC press secretary Michael Czin said. Some of Christies closest aides and allies put public safety at risk, seemingly to exact petty political revenge, and in the aftermath, they lied about it. That, in itself, is inexcusable conduct coming from the administration of someone who wants to be President of the United States.

Gov. Chris Christies office is crowing over the interim report from a legislative panel investigating the closing of lanes leading to the George Washington Bridge, a nasty little operation apparently aimed at punishing the mayor of Fort Lee, N.J., for refusing to endorse Mr. Christie for governor.
While some members of the New Jersey Republican establishment criticized the whole idea of an interim report, Mr. Christies lawyer announced in a written statement that it provided not a shred of evidence Governor Christie knew about the GWB lane alignment beforehand.
That seems to be true. The panel has not shown that Mr. Christie ordered or approved this bone-headed plan.
That still leaves some questions, though, including what sort of a shop the governor was running if his top aides felt not only a strong thirst for political vengeance, but the freedom to express it. And its still not clear what exactly Mr. Christie knew and when he knew it, to reuse an old formulation for political scandal that always seems to be relevant.
The New York Times article on the report said: In a detailed chronology, the report argues that the governor had many opportunities to know about the lane closings, the political motive behind them and the involvement of his administration, even as he insisted he knew nothing.

(2,419 posts)once the indictments start to ? Nothing loosens the lips of a recalcitrant witness like the threat of prosecution. Who will give up the Governor to save their own ass?
Multiple sources familiar with the investigation into last year's traffic jams near the George Washington Bridge tell NBC 4 New York at least half a dozen potential federal indictments in connection with the scandal may be handed down as early as January.
Those facing potential indictment include former staffers to Gov. Christie and current and former Port Authority officials, the sources said. Possible charges may be related to what sources familiar with the probe describe to NBC 4 New York as an apparent conspiracy to cover up what they refer to as a politically motivated plot.

If this report from NBC is accurate, as many as a dozen indictments could be issued in January in relation to the closure of the George Washington Bridge.
NBC 4 New York learned of the potential development in the investigation a day after a 136-page interim report by a joint legislative panel tasked with investigating the lane closures found no evidence Christie was involved in the scheme.
I understand that investigators have found no concrete proof that Governor Chris Christie himself was involved, but this looks very similar to the investigation of Governor Scott Walkers office in Wisconsin and the prosecution of some of his former staff. In both cases, persons very close to and surrounding the governor are indicted or implicated while the governor himself narrowly escapes. And in both cases, I find it extremely hard to believe that the head of state was not at all involved.
Just because there isnt enough evidence to indict Governor Christie, or Governor Walker, doesnt necessarily mean they arent guilty.
