LINCOLN — A Washington, D.C.-based tax policy think tank has endorsed a Nebraska group’s plan to cut taxes in the state.

Representatives of the Tax Foundation on Tuesday said they support a tax plan proposed by the Platte Institute, a conservative-leaning think tank based in Omaha that was founded by Gov.-elect Pete Ricketts.

The Platte Institute’s “Strong Roots Nebraska” plan, released in September, calls for a gradual reduction in the state’s top income tax rate to 5 percent, a 1-percent-a-year reduction in state spending and a freeze for local property tax levies.

Jim Vokal, the institute’s director, called the plan “a sensible approach to creating a better tax climate” that would make Nebraska more competitive with neighboring states.
