I hope you can keep the waterboard from becoming the new emblem of your nation.
Ironically, I'm reading archaeologist Lawrence Keeley's book "War Before Civilization" right now. It's cold comfort to realize that this sort of behavior goes all the way back in time as far as we can see, and pervades virtually all societies. Is this really what we are?

The majority of people are generally peaceful and cooperative in varying degrees.
We are not all war-hungry blood-thirsty monsters, some are, most aren't.
So to answer your question: No, we are not.
We, the majority of peaceful, cooperative, social humans must stop allowing these disruptive, crazy-making, chaos-living people to rule and damage our lives.

We all contain the seeds of evil, but they only germinate in some people, some of the time. And when times get hard, more of those seeds sprout, and more of those people win. The rest of us just keep our mouths shut if we know what's good for us.

(10,998 posts)behave in ways against our true nature, which is basically peaceful, social, cooperative. But to say peaceful people are the same as psychopathic torturers is wrong. Most people have ethical regulatory systems inherent which cause them to pause and stop before potentially committing acts of harm. But some do not, these people are called psycho or sociopaths.
To use the old "we are them" mantra is simply to confuse people into believing the old "we are all sinners" line.

We can choose the path of healing or we can choose the path of destruction at any point in our lives. We are our own saviors, that is the amazing grace.
Hope exists for your pessimism, Glider

This gullibility or naivity isn't unique to America either.
However, I believe more people are gradually waking up to reality.

This is what happens when we let crooks get away with being crooks. No one should be surprised at all that the bush cabal kept on being crooks.

(10,998 posts)The oligarchs convince ordinary people to behave like monsters to carry out their insane delusions.
It has always been the kings, queens, conquerors, emperors, corporatists who have enlisted people to kill, torture, steal and cheat for them.
When are we going to stop living the Abusers' life? When are we going to stand up and announce "No more" to these psychopathic economic royalists? When are we going to stop participating in the system ruling our lives created by the oligarchs? When are we going to democratically create a new system of equality and fairness for all? When are we going to start recognizing the wealthy con artists for what they are, thieves, enslavers and murderers?
