this yr, i have done no research, and the boys at 17, 19 have not mentioned any particular games.
oldest likes strategy. he is really into mindcraft, football and especially the basketball.
my youngest does more role playing.
and of course. no sexist or misogynist bullshit. not with my dollar.

(17,796 posts)Dragon Age: Inquisition might be a possibly for the RPG buff. Does have mature content, but the word I've received from other players is fairly good. Strong intelligent female characters with the inclusion of gay character(s). Although that a small part of the story that many never notice, unsure how far it gets carried out. The rest of the game is RPG heaven, recruit and manage an army to save the world. That is second hand information, so you might want to research it a bit before buying. There is also Shadow of Mordor, but the only thing I know about that one is it's set in the Lord of the Rings world.
Racing games-ratings look like FIFA 15 might be a good bet, unless there's one particular form of racing he prefers.
Buying for kids/youngsters isn't too easy any more.

(110,159 posts)i will check it out, but i am sure that is the one. my oldest is at university without an xbox. he is really looking forward to coming home and playing this one.
i will check out the new madden, and see if they have that.
thanks.
youngest loves the new NBA.

(11,138 posts)They will want Dragon Age: Inquisition. It is far and away the best of the genre right now. It also gets good marks for avoiding the blatant misogyny (armor that looks like it was designed by Victoria's Secret, female characters that exist solely as romantic/sexual scenery) that is sometimes an issue in these games.
Also Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor if they are fans of Tolkien's works. I haven't played it but it is pretty popular right now.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)there was a tad in the first dragon age. also an excellent game. so i let it go. if they are actively trying to avoid it, i praise. at least one son enjoyed that game. i will check it out. i heard about 2. i think i heard positive on the game.
thanks. and i will look up the second suggestion.

(110,159 posts)turned out to be a fail? or was that 2? i dunno. but people were looking forward to it and it flopped? waiting so long. am i remembering correctly?
i am not a fan of diablo, but that falls into meh. if it is well created, then i allow a leeway there. the boys really enjoyed one, i know. i do not know if they played 2. will have to check it out but, any info would be great.

(7,463 posts)too many to name-but the expansion pack and patches corrected most of them.
This is the updated version of the game http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diablo_III:_Reaper_of_Souls - available on pc/xbox one/ps4 etc
It also has 'couch co-op', meaning they can both play it together on the same tv. My girlfriend and I have a lot of fun with it.

(1,596 posts)It's an oldie and may have updates and I don't know if it is available on xBox but it is a fantastic strategy game, if you like trains and even if you don't.
As far as role playing games, the fancy new ones are okay but are getting harder to find. I much prefer the classic types and what I am playing right now is probably the oldest (and best imho) role playing games out there - Ultima Online. It's PC tho.
There's always Skyrim if he doesn't have it already. RPG, xBox and so beautiful.

(25,699 posts)The only downside is that, like WoW, it's not free to play, with a monthly charge of $13. But it IS gorgeous, and plays pretty much like the other Elder Scrolls games. I've only dabbled (can't really afford a pay-to-play MMO of late) but I liked what I saw

(4,524 posts)- "NBA2K15" _ Can't say how it is, as I have no interest in sports, but this seems to be the popular one.
Football
- "Madden NFL 15" - Same as above.
Roleplay
- "Dragon Age: Inquisition" (Might have some sexist tropes - I just started it, so I'm not sure yet. Looks good for now, though.) Standard RPG fare - dragons, leveling up, medieval-ish setting, etc. if you've ever played Dungeons and Dragons, it's the same type of setting: Dungeons, magic, monsters, etc.
- "The Elder Scrolls - Skyrim" (Great game - I've sunk thousands of hours into it. Not sexist at all - strong women everywhere and addictive gameplay. Story is lame and uninteresting, but the gameplay itself is good enough.) Also heavily influenced by D&D.
Sandbox Builder
- "Terraria" - A 2D game that uses building like Minecraft (but 2D instead of 3D). Same idea.
Strategy
- "Civilization V" - Great game. You build civilizations up by creating cities and building army "units." Take over other civilizations and try to win. Very, very addicting. These games are notorious timesinks, hence the term "Just one more turn."

(17,086 posts)Steam is a pc game site. I get all my stuff there on line now. No more boxes, and if I upgrade my 'puter I just redownload the games at no cost. Works for me.
Anyways, for the strategy buff, I rec the Total War series, which are conquer the world historical sims. You can get their "master" collection for about $120 right now, or individual games for as cheap as $10. (The newest one "Rome II" is $60 by itself.) I don't think there's anything particularly offensive about them, unless you have a problem with enslaving or killing off your captives after a battle, and you do learn a lot of geography.

I'm still playing Skyrim for my rp needs, so I can't help much there.

(12,041 posts)It won the Game of the Year award last weekend, and I think you will approve of its depiction of women. The women in the game are all very strong and are placed on equal footing with the male characters. It is also one of the most gay friendly games ever made by a major publisher, there are gay characters and a transgender character with a refreshing lack of stereotypes. The transgender character is introduced like any other character and you don't even know that he is transgender until it is revealed later in the game.
It is an excellent game that embraces diversity, and it is truly massive with the potential for hundreds of hours of gameplay. It will keep your kids busy for months. There is some mature content so it is probably not appropriate for young kids, but for teens and adults it is a great game that embraces diversity.
seabeyond
(110,159 posts)for being so totally respectful, in your understanding with the position i hold, and yet give me so much info on this game. it seems to be the one as a stand out game. thanks.

(12,041 posts)I would much rather play a game with strong female characters that dress like you would expect women in such an environment to dress than playing a game in which a dominatrix in a leather bikini kills stuff on a snow capped mountain.
Dragon Age is probably the most critically acclaimed game of the year and I have no doubt that the fact that they made interesting characters of all genders, races, and sexual orientations is at least part of the reason it has been so successful. Everyone will have characters they can relate to.
