Take the pledge for the 2016 election

I will not vote for, nor contribute to, nor support in any way, any candidate who does not unambiguously condemn torture and the US role in torture, and who does not call for the prosecution of those responsible.

If the Dem Party runs a candidate who has, in the past, waffled on the question of torture would you support such a candidate?

To be perfectly clear I would never support such a person. They are lacking in humanity and we do not need any more leaders like that. Bush/Cheney shamed this country and caused untold human suffering.

I want to know where candidates stand on this issue. How about you?

nominee'? What does that mean? The OP is about not supporting candidates who support torture, and I will add 'who are soft on torture'.

I'll give YOU a straight answer. If the Democratic Nominee supports even mildly the inhumane crime of torture I will not only not support him/her, I will work against that person. I don't support criminals no matter what letter they have after their name.

Now explain why you asked the 'loyalty' question or don't. That's up to you.

I am a Democrat and will fight as hard as I can, whether you like it or not, to keep this party from turning into Republican lite.

You don't get to tell people here who they are.

You have yet to answer a straight question. So let me say this, anyone who supports any candidate who supports torture is not a Democrat, not even a 'left leaning Independent, they are a far right winger.

Decent societies do not support torture period. So if someone asks me 'do you support torture or anyone who waffles on the question of the use of torture' it's easy, my answer is NO, I will never support any candidate who cannot come out and say NO to Torture!

Eg, if a candidate were to say 'well, it should not be US policy (it isn't btw, never has been officially) but ......

I will not be supporting anyone who does not have a record of respecting the laws of this country and the Geneva Conventions.

If there is no candidate who takes their oath seriously, I will focus on Congress because if that should be the case, we will need enough people in Congress to make sure the law is not broken again.

Congress is where the real power is. And it should be the focus of the next election so that it won't matter who is in the WH. If it is a good, Progressive Dem s/he will need support from Congress, if it is not, Congress can stop them from destroying this country.

So, my answer is that it is safe to assume that if we get a candidate whose record on torture is iffy, I won't be supporting them.

Interesting tactic.

"Candidates unwilling to admit this don't deserve to hold public office."

That line there has nothing to do with the litmus test in the op. You have to change it in order to hold ground. That is understood. The whole daddy telling me I should be ashamed is pretty weak. Kind of a joke of a debate tactic. Lets get together and see which one of us does more for others. Time and money. Then I will let you sit back and tell me how much shame I should feel. Not likely. 56. Going to give you my serious reply.
Thu Dec 11, 2014, 09:05 AM
Dec 2014

It is a very serious subject and I don't take it lightly. That and my position is pretty simple.

I in no way believe Obama has stopped torture. He has reigned it back but has not stopped it. I am so tired of seeing people scream Bush from the rooftops simply because they have the ability to speak about and justify torture as relative to the torture done under other administrations. In other words, our torture wasn't as bad. It is my understanding that forced feeding has occurred under the current administration. It is my understanding that black sites have been used during the initial years of this administration. It is my understanding that this administration has been holding people for over six years with no charges. It is my understanding that the current administration has killed American citizens without due process. These are just a quick few things off the top of my head that I cannot justify as non-torture.

So, there is my point. I fully understand it is not all that well received here by many. One side of the argument feels Obamas hands are completely clean and I am just full of Obama hate. Worse yet a racist. The other side thinks all of those at the top should be prosecuted. That would include Obama. Thing is for me that I truly feel Obama has pulled back on torture. His actions have made a difference and is very beneficial to the country as a whole. But I will not sit here and call for the prosecution of Bush when I feel Obama is just as guilty. I am not going to put it in relative terms like that. I think it would be devastating for our country to prosecute Bush and impeach and prosecute Obama at the same time. It would be devastating to the people in this country who had nothing to do with it.

Not one major candidate in the next election will run on prosecuting Bush and Obama. I think it is silly that people simply want to prosecute Bush yet turn a blind eye to our own party simply based on "our actions weren't as bad." Torture is torture. So, in the next election I will not make prosecution a part of my litmus test for Presidency. I won't because I have a pretty good idea that would leave me with a third party candidate with no chance of doing anything but giving the Presidency to republicans. While I won't take this litmus test and won't put torture in relative terms, truth is that we have turned in a better direction. Democrats have been making a big turn in civil rights under Obama. Torture has been slowed and the verbiage coming out of the White House is much better. The Federal Government is much better under a Democratic Administration.

I know you aren't going to agree with me but I thought it fair I lay my thoughts out for you. After all, my original reply was a little snarky and this subject deserves better than that. That being said, I don't think the op was made in earnest. At all.

what you said. You may even be right that prosecuting two former presidents, VPs and other high officials would be bad for the country.

I'm not sure about that. I agree that prosecuting one and not the other would be bad for the country.

But both? I'd have to think about that. It might have the opposite effect.

There are different degrees of crimes. So Bush/Cheney definitely should be charged with the most serious crimes.

However if the country and the world saw that this country won't tolerate violations of their own laws and international law regardless of who does it, it might be good for the country.

One thing that is not good for the country is that we are now known as a country that tortures and that we don't hold war criminals accountable.

Which is worse, to be viewed as a rogue nation with no moral authority, or to be viewed as a country that respects the law, justice and humanity in general.

What a powerful country we would be if we used all the power we have to preserve life, to respect it, rather than what we are now, a destroyer of life.

Just want to add, that if we had prosecuted the Bush War Criminals, it would have been so much easier for the next President to simply refuse to condone anything that could be viewed as a violation of the law.

Iow, it would have set a different standard.

But we are where we are, for now.

"Just want to add, that if we had prosecuted the Bush War Criminals, it would have been so much easier for the next President to simply refuse to condone anything that could be viewed as a violation of the law."

That is just so simple. Hold people accountable. He had the chance to hold them accountable. He went in a different direction. Hold them accountable then hold yourself to a higher standard. I so wish that happened from the beginning of this administration.

cannot do that, not unless we provide a Congress for them that will almost unanimously support him/her.

Too much power has been given to people who have the worst intentions for this country and it may be dangerous for a president to try to take away some of that power.

I really don't know for sure, but we know how they can smear and undermine good people when they do speak out.

But something has to happen to end these policies, they are weakening this country and imo, it is treasonous to use the trust of the people who give them that power, to use it against this country's best interests.
