(39,215 posts)8. We have always had to lack of laws on this type of thing but we have also always had another
form of control. Communities historically shunned those who broke the unwritten laws they considered important. That means that we let these idiots know that we will not put up with their actions. Boycotting is a very old practice. It was not always used for good (ie communities shunned children born out of wedlock and racism was rampant) but this practice can be used for good. In the 70s we stopped a whole generation from using racist phrases. Unfortunately we could not do it permanently.
