We see you, eyes wide open and we see you. We can no longer sit down and shut up. We must focus now. And we sure as hell need to do this together. One voice rising for justice. Still I rise! It is way past time for justice.
Still I Rise by Maya Angelou
You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, Ill rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
Cause I walk like Ive got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still Ill rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.
Does my haughtiness offend you?
Dont you take it awful hard
Cause I laugh like Ive got gold mines
Diggin in my own back yard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, Ill rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like Ive got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of historys shame
I rise
Up from a past thats rooted in pain
I rise
Im a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak thats wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.
This is probably Maya Angelous best-known poem, and for good reason. It is a wonderfully defiant, human, uplifting cry from the deep heart of America, which tells a story that Im sure speaks to us all.
The poem roots itself in the history of the African-American people, with its talk of slavery, and that gorgeous image of the black ocean, leaping and wide such a powerful metaphor for overcoming oppression. But the poems scope is not limited to one people; it speaks of the universal notion of the defiance of the downtrodden. Angelous voice is resounding and sensually rhythmic, and carries so beautifully her message of strength and positivity.

(83,791 posts)Not this time. It has to change here, a huge change. I am not stupid and believe it will end overnight, however it is a new beginning. The light is sharply focused. It is a turning point.
Thank you Cha for Maya's quote.

(11,833 posts)For getting outside and being seen. This must change. Black lives matter.
I participated in a protest in New Mexico today. Albuquerque has had a major problem with police shooting unarmed people. The Department of Justice is investigating and should issue a report soon. It's intolerable. The whole system should be changed, starting with police training in nonviolence.
It will change, thanks to all these protesters.
It warms my heart that so many around the country participated.
Looking at these beautiful people, you can see the warmth in their hearts.

and for every black life that was murdered by cops.
Want to talk about it? I do. Sadly DU or those at DU who are so outraged about this President on torture, when he was not the one that did it. Yet the torture of PoC on DU we get crickets. I am ashamed of you. I am so ashamed.

(11,833 posts)So unbelievably sad.
She should be with an alive father right now.
I agree with your other comments too. It's really disheartening to me that people keep posting so much bs on so many other threads, when these historic and internationally known events are taking place right now.
I too am ashamed at so-called democrats who keep berating the President incessantly. It's interesting to me that that have all that outrage toward our President, yet consistently express almost nothing for these kinds of threads and images.
Oh well sheshe2. I am glad there are some people here who I really like and enjoy. You among them! I can feel the humanity though all your posts.

(83,791 posts)It hurts my soul, I can only imagine her pain. I lost my dad a few weeks ago, however that was from old age and Alzheimer. Eric Garner never got that chance, lovingmydog.
Thank you for you kind words.

Sick and tired of the "Press" and other media always downplaying the numbers that show up for these important social movements.

(6,151 posts)Maybe that's part of the funk I've been in lately. Would've loved to go but couldn't. Sweet memories from youth, at least. A friend got to go though, and he kept posting videos on FB so it was almost like being with everyone.
That's a great Angela Davis quote. Thanks for the OP.
