for Bush v. Gore, we are NEVER going to impeach him.

They interfered with the results of a national election. As far as I'm concerned they are guilty of treason.

(28,075 posts)and the lifetime appointments were an effort to keep politics out of the judiciary. It was never a perfect system but it used to work fairly well.

(13,218 posts)If he had a massive coronary, but I might smile a little if he had a severe stroke which would leave him with sight and hearing and not much of any thing else. No, wait! I'd laugh out loud.

(2,479 posts)Apparently, the idea is as follows:
1) Person X is known to have planted a nuclear device in Los Angeles
2) By torturing X it is known that Antonin Scalia can determine where the bomb is and thus save the lives of several tens of millions of people.
3) Antonin Scalia has no compulsion about violating person X in any manner whatsoever in order to heroically save all these lives.
4) But if Antonin Scalia has reason to fear facing legal sanction of his use of torture, he will simply opt to save his own skin and let the tens of millions of people die.
Thanks for clearing that up for me, Tony.

(57,936 posts)As for the idea that human rights are not "written in the sky," does he believe in God?
Does he think the Pope should determine what human rights are innate to us?
His statement about human rights sounds like he is a relativist.
And as far as torture goes, does he think that the ISIS' ideas or the NAZIs' ideas about what does and does not qualify as torture should be OK in their societies?
I think the man is losing his mental capacity, his mind in the literal sense. I wonder whether he is well.

(26,620 posts)but this takes it all.
"What are human rights is not written up in the sky, and if it were written up in the sky, it would not be up to judges, lawyers, just because they've gone to law school, to know what human rights ought to be and therefore are," Scalia said.
"And therefore each society's perception of what it believes human rights should be ought to be up to that society, and I think it's very foolish to yield that determinations not only to a foreign body but to a foreign body of judges," he said. "I don't know why anyone would want to do that."
Unbelievable, and this evil man is shaping America in his own awful image.

(17,217 posts)he says ...... "I don't think it's so clear at all," Scalia said.
What if he were being tortured the way these people were??? He would change his mind fast. Bet you anything.
USA .... SHOULD NOT TORTURE!!!!

(13,685 posts)In the meantime, a constitutional amendment detailing that the government can not torture anyone is the only course for the people to undertake.

(13,685 posts)There is precedent for that in some states, this vote to keep or remove justices.
Move to Amend is up and running for an amendment for Citizens United.
I think it is past time for a few choice amendments.

(41,131 posts)played the part. While behind the bench, the judge's trusty court reporter knew to que him his lines when he forgot, messed up. The Pros team finally realized it after a few noticeable case blunders. It was sad, the main City Pros discreetly took the judge to lunch and brought up stepping down. Beatty said, 'and do what? my wife is dead & my only child is an alcoholic'.
Best to retire on a good note-

(41,131 posts)I know the perfect place- AVE MARIA, FLORIDA. In the SE part of Florida is a very new town called Ave Maria and it's democracy free! Built and owned by Dominoes billionaire Tom Monoghan. He owns the catholic church, the town, all of it. It's a very devout place, there is no contraception allowed or porn. It sounds divine, and perfect for the Supreme. I think Santorum should move too, they'd both be very happy there like so many of their friends and associates.
