http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-white-rhino-dies-safari-park-20141214-story.htmlAngalifu, one of six northern white rhinos in the world, died Sunday at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, apparently from old age, park officials announced.
The death of the 44-year-old male leaves only one elderly northern white rhino (a female) at the Safari Park, one at a zoo in the Czech Republic and three in a preserve in Kenya.
"Angalifu's death is a tremendous loss to all of us," said Rancy Reiches, curator of mammals at the Safari Park. Angalifu has been in decline for days, refusing to eat.
Poaching has pushed the northern white rhino to the brink of extinction. Many cultures believe rhino horn has medicinal value; a flourishing black-market exists for rhino horn.

Attempts at captive breeding at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park have not been successful. Angalifu and the female, Nola, were unable to breed.
Just last week, conservation officials in Kenya conceded that efforts at breeding the rhinos at the Old Pejeta Conservancy have not been successful.
