Why Australians Are Telling Muslims, #illridewithyou, Amid Sydney Hostage Situation

The Twitter hashtag "#illridewithyou" appears to have started after user @SirTessa offered to ride public transportation alongside anyone wearing religious garments who feared that they would be harassed or singled out as a result of the hostage situation.

This is the real Australia, not the Australia of our xenophobic Prime Minister.

Judging from ABC television which I watched for hours, people are very shocked.

But most see it as the act of a lone, disturbed man. Only those with their own agenda are pushing the anti-Muslim bandwagon, which is why trends like #Illridewithyou are so heartening.

I saw a good quote this morning: "If John commits a crime, John gets blamed. If Abdullah commits a crime, Islam gets blamed".

We need to focus on the truth of this right now.

I do hope people keep this horrific incident in perspective in regards to civil liberties. I know they let the perpetrator out on bail, but as his lawyer said, the judge has to evaluate the evidence at the time it's presented.

After his highly unpopular budget earlier this year, and ever-sliding poll figures since, he'll grab at anything to make himself look like our saviour and protector, so he's pushing the "terrorism" card for all he's worth.

Aided, of course, by the slimy Rupert Mudoch. But only trolls read his papers, and the rest of us can put #Illridewithyou into action.
