Why they tortured?

Make no mistake, George W Bush and Dick Cheney knew all about the torture techniques that were used on prisoners. Cheney proudly admits it. Bush is reluctant to do so. Why did they approve such horrendous brutality?

Everything is predicated on the attacks of 9/11. They did not act bravely. They acted like cowards. They were personally embarrassed that terrorists would attack on their watch. From the beginning, their goal was revenge. They were petty and weak leaders.

Nothing was off-limits. They would lie to the American people in their quest for revenge, as they did before they invaded Iraq.
Bush despised Saddam Hussein and was thrilled when he was
captured and eventually hanged. He kept Saddam's pearl-
handled pistol as a personal souvenir.

They openly promoted an environment of punishment and revenge that led to torture by those all down the chain of command, including lowly Army enlisteds. In the end, those at the bottom of the chain of command were the only ones punished.

They tortured because they were weak and revengeful individuals. They thought the country would hold them responsible for the attacks of 9/11. In the process of their ill-advised and wasteful wars in the Middle East, they resorted to acts of brutality unlike any we had seen in previous wars. They now parade around from one media outlet to another preaching the virtues of their "enhanced interrogation techniques".

All of Cheney's dreams came true that day.

I bet he was never happier than when he was directing things from the secure bunker.

Americans' refusal to look into the truth about that day will allow them to do the same thing again.

You do not mean "me" personally, do you? I never let them off the hook for any of their criminal activities. Perhaps you are talking of the generic "American people"?

re. allowing 9/11 to happen and that the torture was somehow an over-reaction to cover up for their incompetence.

That's an understandable conclusion but I think they knew what they were doing from the get-go. The torture had nothing to do with revenge, that was just an excuse and perhaps a good motivater for the lower levels.

I'm not sure, but I do believe their arrogant actions, such as dropping out of treaties and total disregard for what was going on with the Palestinians, did create the environment for such an attack and they were not prepared for it, even after they were given warning. In that respect, I think they were "incompetent". I don't think revenge and an excuse were mutually exclusive. I think they were opportunistic in some ways. Also, I do believe that a fish rots from the head first...

designed to overturn the Constitution and destroy American democracy.

It was about 50% successful.

United 93's take off was delayed by 41 minutes which gave the passengers and/or a fighter jet a chance to take it down.

Otherwise it would have knocked down the US Capitol Building or the White House. If the former then the COG protocols would come into effect mandating an appointed Congress of technocrats convened in a secure bunker and in effect de facto military rule. If the latter then the Executive Branch would be placed in a secure bunker.

Failing that, the anthrax letters made sure that Congress fell into line and passed the Patriot Act.

...that could have happened if there had been an "appointed Congress"? I can't see how any of these politicians would ever give up their position for an executive appointed one? But, if anything, Bush and Cheney showed that they were capable of anything.

It's a measure of POWER to feel you have no recourse but to torture. It is SERIOUS BUSINESS to have to do that. Bush, Cheney, the GOP in general, suffer from this continual need to have something VERY, VERY SERIOUS to do.

Because governing like you mean it is too complicated for little minds.

they were definitely on a power trip.

From the moment the submarine with Enron executives aboard surfaced and killed those Japanese tourists until the moment the spy plane was shot down or "crashed" in Chinese territory and we had to beg to get it back in pieces, until the moment we sat back and said nothing as Israel was bulldozing villages of their neighbors, even as they were pleading for help.

That all happened before 9/11.

It was orchestrated by that faction of the GOP PNAC etc. and it worked. They are still there waiting for more. Just wait til there is a GOP-controlled congress. We will be back out there fighting futile wars to protect the pipelines and oil supplies. It's easier to switch on the TV and watch the football game and blot all of this out (like most of the populace).
