Stephen Colbert's cable-news alter ego takes a final bow after nine years of ‘Report’

COMEDY CENTRAL
Stephen Colbert on an episode of "The Colbert Report" in New York.
POSTED: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, 2014 1:00 AM
By Casey Logan / World-Herald staff writer

Ready the trumpets.

Tonight, Stephen Colbert, the South Carolina-raised, Second City-trained comedian with the appearance of a geometry teacher and speed-of-light wit, will take what seems to be his final bow as Stephen Colbert, the bloviating, cable news alter-ego that’s made him famous.

After more than nine years on Comedy Central, “The Colbert Report” comes to an end. Now, as the real Colbert prepares to take over for David Letterman next year, fans of the fake Colbert are left to marvel over one of the great satiric runs in entertainment history.

It’s easy to take it for granted now, but in 2005, there were doubts as to whether Colbert’s smug “Daily Show” correspondent character would stand on its own. The spinoff “Colbert Report” — with the word “Report” pronounced as Colbert does his surname, with a silent “t” — drew positive reviews from the start, in part for the way it nailed with eviscerating satire the bombastic production value and flag-pin patriotism of cable news. But even then, some wondered if the shtick had longevity.

My wife and I went to the rally for sanity. Our names were on the scroll when Colbert was raising money - Krugman was the guest at the time.

God I am going to miss that show.

but I never thought he could sustain it through more than a season. Amazing that it has run this long and stayed fresh and funny.

I have been a loyal citizen of the Colbert Nation since the first show, which aired while Mom was visiting me in Waikiki. It took me almost until the end of the episode to realize he wasn't really a conservative. To this day, there are reich-wingers who believe he's one of them!

if he will resume his real name again. Colbert instead of Colbair, people won't know who you are talking about if he goes back to the original pronunciation.

In addition to the reason you state, it'll be a nod to his TDS/TCR roots.

Does anyone know what he went by in his "Strangers With Candy" days?

Damn, I'll miss the Report.

Won't know what to do without that priceless takeoff on the smug, self-righteous, self-consumed, self-worshipping, nauseating wingnut.

Fox is probably elated to see him go.

I'm sure he'll be great as himself conducting "normal" interviews, but still...

And then there was that WH Correspondents' Dinner - Colbert is delish - he had the morons completely fooled.
Never will I forget the response of the RW press that night.

He was one of the few who assumed that his audience had a modicum of education, while, at the same time, being a lighthearted goof.

I'll miss Letterman, too when he signs off.

There's change afoot in TV land, that's for sure...!
