Obama Administration Issues Executive Order to Protect Transgender Rights in Public Employment

President Barack Obama issued an executive order Thursday to prohibit transgender discrimination in public employment, another unilateral move by the administration in the wake of the 2014 midterms.

According to the new order, the Justice Department will now interpret the Civil Rights Act as covering transgender employees in workplace discrimination disputes, allowing the DOJ to bring suits against public employers for firing employees on the basis of gender identity.

Last summer Obama moved to protect gays and lesbians from discrimination by public contractors. Both moves were made in the face of pressure to exempt religious groups from LGBT orders in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Hobby Lobby ruling.

Aides have said the president feels “liberated” with the elections behind him. Obama has made major moves in the past few weeks, issuing an executive order to delay deportations, normalizing relations with Cuba, and striking a climate deal with China.

but where are the progressive economic moves?

We just had CRonmibus shoved down our throats and now here comes TPP

Is this the grand bargain, we give away the remaining wealth of the USA and shake hands with Cuba?

I probably shouldn't say this -- but -- VERY close friend of mine was at a White House policy briefing in past 48 hours where XXXXXX said White House policy for the next two years is:
-- take no prisoners
-- if it helps the American people, do it
-- fuck a bunch of Republicans

I mean really, anyone trying to downgrade this good human rights news with any kind of "Yeah, but..." complaint is really stretching to be contrary. I'd buy a used car from POTUS, I think he is a trustworthy and decent human being.

Also there's that whole business about just making shit up.

I agree with you, MADem, I think the POTUS is trustworthy too. He's methodical and just keeps plugging away. He's even tempered, and I think modest in a way. By the latter I mean he could do with tooting his own horn a bit more often, or at least designate a staffer to do that for him!

The thing with Cuba is indicative: he obviously has been working at that for a long time, and now here it is, including half a dozen federal departments following along with their own fully fledged plans for implementation.

And now this. I wonder what else he has up his short sleeved Aloha shirt to announce while he's on vacation? I can hardly wait, frankly.

Mele Kalikimaka!

"Liberated" enough to knee-cap the middle class and the next generation with TPP and CRomnibus.

Keep up with the Triangulation Propaganda, though. Maybe there's some dumb person out there who'll buy into it.
