Derby the Disabled Dog, Gets 3-D Printed Legs, Runs for the First Time

By now, the heartwarming video of Derby the dog running for the first time in his life thanks to 3D-printed prosthetic legs has officially gone viral. But Derby, a rescue dog who was born with disabled and deformed front legs, isn’t the only one excited about his fancy new limbs. While 3D printers have been used to make replacement limbs for humans, Derby is the first animal to be successfully outfitted with 3D-printed prosthetics. His ability to run marks a huge step forward for the small but remarkable field of animal prosthetics.

Derrick Campana — who helped create Derby’s new legs with designers at the 3D printing company 3D Systems — has been a trailblazer in that field for the past decade.

A certified orthotist, specializing in the creation and use of corrective braces and artificial limbs, Campana had worked only with human patients until about 10 years ago. But when a veterinarian brought a dog in need of a prosthesis to the facility where Campana was working, he discovered he could apply the same technology that he’d mastered on people to help animals. He also soon learned there was a market for animal prosthetics and orthotics that hadn’t really been tapped. So Campana founded Animal Ortho Care in Chantilly, Va., one of the first companies to make orthotics and prosthetics specifically for animals. Today, Campana told Yahoo News, Animal Ortho Care is one of five such companies in the world, seeing between 200 and 300 animal patients each month.

I thought I heard his human say something like they were starting him off on the short ones so it wouldn't be such a shock to him. It'll be so great if eventually he can have real leg-like prostetics that would keep his front and back legs the same height and give him more mobility like these...

for the same reason, they can be revised quickly and reprinted when the patient's condition changes.

3-D printing is going to revolutionize a lot. Yes, it started off badly when they printed a stupid gun but now that medicine has discovered it, a lot of things will get a bit cheaper.

Oh, and that doggy is adorable as he takes off on funny looking legs that finally work. There is no joy that can compare to that of a really happy dog.

My heart just swelled seeing him so happily racing around on his new wheels! Reminds me of the story of the little horse that got a prostetic leg...

any excited colt. His person was just hoping he'd be able to walk, but the little horse was all about running, kicking, and jumping.

as soon as they realize they can move with their new prosthetics. No fear or trepidation, just thrill and joy and off they go! I so hope that with the 3D printing it makes such prosthetics for animals both easier and cheaper to help these poor furry souls break out of their disability shells.

Every time I see one of these animals just take off with joy I just want to run along with them joining the thrill! "Yeah! We're running and jumping around! Wooohoooo!" It's so awesome!

It is just wonderful that she did that for that dog. I wish I had money. I'd contact that company and see about doing it for other pets too. That's so sweet. My eyes seem to be watering. I had better get that looked at.

It's so heartwarming to see animals be able to move about better and see the joy on their faces when they do so.

and made a prosthetic hand for a little boy. It was very inexpensive. They will replace it as he grows.

One advantage of 3D printers is that they can make parts that are so much more exact and fit better.
