WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama on Thursday capped a swift and forceful response to an Associated Press investigation by signing into law a measure that bars suspected Nazi war criminals from receiving U.S. Social Security benefits.
AP's investigation, which was the impetus for the No Social Security for Nazis Act, found that dozens of former Nazis collected millions of dollars in retirement benefits after being forced to leave the United States. Recipients ranged from the SS guards who patrolled the Third Reich's network of camps where millions of Jews died to a rocket scientist who helped develop the V-2 rocket that Nazi Germany used to attack London.
The speed with which the legislation moved underscored the outrage AP's findings triggered among lawmakers on Capitol Hill and American taxpayers. The House unanimously approved the bill Dec. 2 and the Senate passed it by voice vote just two days later.
Mike King, a Vietnam veteran and a retired police officer in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, gets a Social Security check of $900 a month. That's less than half of what he could be getting based on his years in the workforce. But his benefits are reduced because of a rule that docks retirees who simultaneously collect a public pension. It's "appalling," he said, that former Nazis collected benefits when he and others in his position are forced to accept less.

(2,682 posts)Just exactly how many former Nazis are collecting Social Security that the entire Congress of the United States needed to take the time, effort and assets involved to introduce, discuss and pass this law and then take up the President's time to sign it. And they did this instead of dealing with issues that affect millions of people, the environment, the economy or other important works. Unless the bill provides for repayment by former Nazis, time and effort would have been better spent on something more useful. Doing nothing while appearing to be doing something. That pretty much sums up this Congress.

(1,587 posts)Even going with an age of 20 at the time, most of these guys would be more than 80 years old now. How many could there be?
Also, I take issue with making laws that affect "suspected" Nazis. Find them guilty of a crime according to US law, then take away the benefits they earned.
And I hate Nazis. The thought of those dirty bastards getting anything good sickens me.

I'm sure some moron will accuse me of being a NAZI sympathizer or some foolishness but fuck em, they would be dumber than dogshit, the process is absurd and before long some peckerwood will decide that the idea should be expanded perhaps starting with child molesters or some other abhorrent group and slowly expand the reach until they can steal people's money for reasons few would hop onto now but after boiling the frog a bit will seem less outlandish, particularly as the pressure for general cuts increases.
This is a really bad idea and by definition is of little to no actual consequence at the budget level, just grandstanding with a camel's nose that few would complain about slipping under the tent.

(6,261 posts)If they paid into the system, they're entitled to benefits. Social Security is NOT welfare, and feel good measures like this make it sound like it is.

(32,068 posts)That's an interesting question. I knew about folks fleeing to Argentina. Wouldn't be surprised if some of the higher-up scientists were helped out by friends in other countries.
