General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSince we won't have actual democracy again 'til 2022(at the earliest), what do we do now?
The House will be gerrymandered 'til then(we'll have to somehow sweep the state legislative races in 2020 to even begin to undo that).
It's more-than-possible that the Senate will stay in GOP hands 'til then(or have, at best, too tiny a Dem majority to matter).
We can't even count on holding the White House(and with some of our possible nominees, it wouldn't matter if we did.
So...how do we organize a culture of resistance in what's going to be six years of total powerless and sham "elections"?

(62,276 posts)The Blue Dogs were rapidly destroyed in 2010 and there haven't been many running since.
I'll note that "liberal" democrats cheered the loss of the Blue Dogs even though they were objectively left of the far right fascist teabaggers.
We won seats in 2006 because we ran Blue Dogs, objective fact. The 50 state strategy requires Blue Dogs. Fact.

(62,276 posts)Since the question was about seats (gerrymandered districts).
Yes sometimes Blue Dogs don't vote the right way with regards to legislation. So what? I count maybe a handful of the past ones who were more Republican than Democrat, if that. Generally when the votes are needed, Democrats show up, Blue Dog, New Democrat, Progressive, it doesn't matter.

(62,325 posts)progressive legislation and the voters spoke about that clearly. In two mid terms now.
They also voted for Progressive issues on local ballots so we know that Progressive ARE popular which is why they got rid of those who do not support Progressive issues.

(12,471 posts)but I have been fighting these bastards for more than 40 years, and am a bit sick and tired of it.
I plan to retire outside of the US, while I still have a defined pension. The soonest I can do this is in about 2 1/2 years from now.
I just am hoping that they don't turn this place into a TOTAL police state by then.

(3,891 posts)We won the house in 2006. It can be done but requires a national approach instead of a each local politician tries to redefine the Democratic party to suit the day of the week in the area he's currently standing in.
It requires hard work and forethought.

(30,481 posts)Start doing what the Republicans are really good at. Re-start local and build a coalition from the ground up. It is the only true reason the brand image of Republicans stays around. They have been great at it. Local school boards, city councils, county seats, etc.. Many are fearful of this because results aren't rapidly seen. Fact is it is how Republicans keep themselves in the position to gerrymander. Start local.
I read and re-read my title line. It is exactly what I want to say but the words "your mindset" are often taken poorly. Your mindset is understandable and is shared by many. That line has no offensive tone to it.

(50,254 posts)my mindset is meant to be hard-eyed realism, but your points are valid.
We need to rebuild local progressive politics(as Kshama Sawant has helped do in Seattle and the Richmond Progressive Alliance has done in their little oil town in the Bay Area.

(30,481 posts)local politics mindset. I live in a blue area surrounded by a sea of red. Get onto the local boards and win local elections and it does spread. It is a tough road to follow. Local republicans are relentless and it is has been a proven winner for them. Start local, build it up. People want to just laugh at republicans. As a Floridian I have seen their ground game first hand and it is nothing to laugh at. They run municipalities using this strategy.
