Beauty means something different to everyone, and for a lot of people it is very much influenced by where they live and what kind of cultural and societal cues shaped their preferences as they grew up.
Plus-size Colombian-American model Maria Southard Ospina was curious about what was considered beautiful in different parts of the world, and decided to do an experiment to find out. She provided 21 different photo editors from various countries with a photograph of her, asking them to fix and perfect her according to their countrys standards of beauty.

(2,061 posts)That's plus size? Standards are way off. She looks good and she looks healthy. I can't believe that is plus sized? No wonder women complain about such a harsh standard. Models, to me, look boney and unhealthy and I don't understand the appeal.

It's a rare person who doesn't hold such prejudices. Certainly I've never met one.

(65,076 posts)She says only 3 of the 21 countries did anything drastic, but she didn't name Italy.
That looked pretty drastic to me. They changed the size and shape of her eyes, slimmed her face and darkened her complexion. That seems like more than minor touch-up, like some of the photos seemed to be.
