*The Trials of Muhammad Ali

is replaying on PBS, tonight on WETA in DC area, on Independent Lens, and maybe other places.

Recalling a formative period in Muhammad Ali's life, the mid-1960s, when he embraced the Nation of Islam, changed his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali and refused induction into the Army (and possibly being sent to Vietnam). The latter led to the toughest bout of his life: fighting to overturn a prison sentence he received for draft evasion. Included: remarks from his brother Rahman; ex-wife Khalilah Camacho-Ali; journalist Robert Lipsyte; and Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan.

His courage was enormous I remember being a kid and watching him box and then to stand on principle and give up his freedom was even more inspiring. He is one of a kind and belongs to the world.

In my opinion, we never got to see him at his very best. Those years that he couldn't fight because he was appealing his conviction would have given us some of the greatest fights ever if some top quality opponents could have been found. Imagine Ali - Frazier 1 if Ali hadn't still been shaking off the ring rust.

that his ali center, and his work as an activist is quite an achievement as well.
