Last edited Fri Dec 26, 2014, 01:35 PM - Edit history (4)
Justice is as justice does; and - in this case - justice didn't happen. In 2006, Carol Horne (pic below by Buffalo Bullet), was a 19 year veteran of the Buffalo, New York Police Department, who stood tall against a fellow officer (Gregory Kwiatkowski) brutality of choking a handcuffed black man (Neal Mack).
Instead of being commended for doing the right thing -
Carol Horne was fired and denied her pension.
[br]
[br]
[br]
Brutal Officer Testified Carol Horne Did NO Wrong!
This firing and denial of pension is manifest injustice in the extreme. It occurred, in spite of the fact that officer Gregory Kwiatkowski (who has since been forced to retire due to other acts of brutality and racism) - actually is upon the public record stating that officer Carol Horne did NO Wrongs.
In this current age of national uproar about police brutality, including the choking death of another black man; officer Carol Horne's act of bravery crys foul loudly, about the injustices of police systems - nationwide - that appear to reward racism and brutality, while punishing good faith conduct.
Officer Kwiatkowski was called a hero, apparently for telling the "black bitch" to get her hands off him, when he punched officer Carol Horne hard enough that she had to have her bridge fixed.
From Buffalo Bullet journalist Chris Stevenson (pic below) we have these telltale remarks about the trial of Mr. Mack v Kwiatkowski.
The next court date is tomorrow 9:30am, City Court Bldg., 50 Deleware 8th floor part 29.
Officer Carol Brown is a hero and should be honored - not disparaged!
[br]
[br]
All the pictures above, are by the Buffalo Bullet.com. A journalist (Chris Stevenson pic below) from the Buffalo Bullet, has been on the case since the beginning. Chris notes that everyone has tried to bury the case into history (apparently - including Carol Horne's own attorney {Barbara Sims}), as Mr. Stevenson reflects in his recent online article
"Neal Mack Trial Revives Tense Moments of 2006" -
as Chris Stevenson states;
If, but for nothing else, Chris Stevenson is one of my heroes, for his campaign against the death penalty.

PLEASE Sign PETITION to Reinstate Carol Horne's Pension
[br]
Have looked hard to find a petition for Carol Horne and came up empty. So I've started one for us at Change.org. Please sign and pass around? Let's tell Buffalo that America is watching what their Buffalo, New York City Council will do; and how its decision will help quell the rising tide of admocity - or seek to calm raging "sees"!

In May of this year Kwiatkowski and two other officers were indicted for civil rights violations against four black teenagers, just days before the statute of limitations was due to expire. One of the teens was also the son of a Buffalo police officer.

(20,219 posts)I'd even venture to say Male is the foundational bond.
If she'd been a black male officer stepping in to protect and serve, my guess is the backlash would have been a bit less.
Just my perspective, from observing social dynamics, comparing gendered situations.
laserhaas
(7,805 posts)Making this much more reprehensible - is that he punched her (made her lose her bridge)
Doubt he would have done that to someone like me (not a small/easy guy).
Though it seems as if this bad cop - likes to fight - people he can easily bully....

(20,219 posts)That's at the core, and it goes back so far----- all the way back to human prehistory.

(22,651 posts)A contact number that you personally have checked that works. So hopefully anyone who really cares will contact that city board of directors about their 'police issue'.
Direct contact is best, they do count the numbers of calls, emails, faxes and have to keep a record of them.
Far as 'general' petitions go, groups I have worked with were directly told that prewritten online petitions are counted as 'one complaint'.
This was for online petitions to DOI/BLM some with hundreds/thousands of sigs. The DOI/BLM even told one group they would only accept 'snail mail' complaints and they had a one week deadline. If you send an email or make a phone call be sure to tell whoever answers you are copying(c) your email to other authorities so they don't delete email or ignore your call. send a copy to the local press too.

(7,805 posts)Just trying to show Officer Horne - that (around the country) people care.
At DailyKos, we helped get Trayvon's petition from 25,000 to 2 million;
and also helped get 600,000 (with Pope, President Carter and ex FBI chief)
about the Troy Ray Davis execution.
At the end of the day - neither of those cases worked out the way we wished.
But the thought DOES count!

Then, when someone performs a truly heroic act, we cut their pension.

Certainly not long term nor highly publicized admiration, held up as role models, figures of respect.
Historically, only a very few Black women who fought for abolition and later, Civil Rights come to mind as widely recognized. (Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, and Rosa Parks)

(65,616 posts)It must be hard for minorities to be cops in some areas. I salute each and every minority that takes on the system and becomes a law enforcement officer. MAYBE THAT IS what we need in this country! Break the white man's stranglehold on the Force.
She should still be an officer serving the community, yet she DARED...she DARED touch a white man that was choking the life out of a black man. She DARED. Seems sometimes we have made ZERO progress in areas like racism in law enforcement. Racism in politics. Racism in the M$M.
It pisses me off to no end that she was treated like a 'bad cop', all the while she was trying to reign in a bad cop. And the system went along with the bad cop and threw the good one away like she didn't even matter as a human being.
Are their any minority police union leaders? There has to be some.
