Any chance the hacking of Sony was actually a viral media ad campaign for The Interview?

Does anyone think that maybe there was no hack? That the released emails were fakes and that the whole thing was made up to get publicity for the movie?

but I also think there's a good chance that Sony used the opportunity to pump up interest in an otherwise run-of-the-mill movie.

4. There was definitely a hack, just not by North Korea

I think Sony pulled the movie because on top of the embarrassment the emails were giving them, the advance critical response the movie was getting was overwhelmingly terrible. I myself was quite intrigued by the concept until I saw the trailers (which the hackers have demanded all be removed, LOL). What could have been a Dr. Strangelove-ish battle royal between media, politics, fame, and pop culture looks to be just another grossout-infested two-hour beer commercial. Lucky for them the North Korean cyber terrorists "forced" Sony to pull it under the "threat" of retaliation.

Maybe if they'd set it in an imaginary oppressive country like Sacha Baron Cohen or the Marx Brothers did...

My bet's still on the hapless reaction by Sony execs to the financial intersection of liability, branding and imaging.

Once the FBI and White House became involved, the 'joke' would be over and someone would be facing
jail time and heavy fines.

Its a possibility but I would hope that the FBI is looking into that as part of their investigation and if this turns out to be the case I hope those responsible would be held accountable.

One so massive it would make a studio executive's balls shrivel in fear.

Also one that any actual hacker or national intelligence agency would be able to debunk if it were fake.

This is why conspiracy theories are almost never true. Too many credible people with both the capacity and the interest to expose it, all magically and for no reason whatsoever going along with it.

But if you find it incredible that a crazy Orwellian dictatorship that routinely threatens to "rain down fire" on the West would hack a studio over a movie mocking their leader, your logic is not our Earth logic.

It fired all its IT workers back in January to "save money."

OTOH -- given that there are a lot of disgruntled IT workers out there who knows the ins and outs of the Sony systems and what their vulnerabilities are, maybe ....... No that eould be crazy talk.

This is a movie that looked awful in trailers and now people are going to see it as an act of protest or patriotism.
