The Creepy Misogynist Movement That's Making Conservatives Even More Sexist

http://www.alternet.org/gender/creepy-misogynist-movement-thats-making-conservatives-even-more-sexist

Denying that sexism is a real problem is a standard talking point on the right these days. But recently, it seems that simply denying the existence of sexism is not enough. Instead, conservatives on Fox News and other right-wing outlets seem to want to take it a step further, arguing that, in 21st-century America, women are actually oppressing men. It’s similar to the long-standing habit of many on the right to declare themselves victims of “reverse racism.”

In this case, many of the tropes and obsessions come directly from a fringe, online movement that calls itself “men’s rights activism." MRA rhetoric is notable for being intensely paranoid, seeing women as a subversive group that is out to get men. They argue that feminism--particularly feminism that addresses the problem of violence against women--is not an egalitarian movement as advertised, but a darkly evil movement that invents the problems of sexism, rape and domestic violence in order to gain power over men. It’s all very silly and hard to take seriously, except that some of the rhetorical gambits of MRAs are actually being trotted out by supposedly mainstream conservatives. The result is that the already misogynist right is getting even more misogynist.

The influence of MRA thinking was all over the recent story of Missouri state legislator Rick Brattin, who introduced a bill that would require women to get permission from the man who impregnated them in order to get an abortion. The story was notable not just because this runs counter to what the mainstream anti-choice movement prefers to do--their line now is that they want to restrict abortion to “protect” women--but also because Brattin’s explanations of his thinking were pure MRA paranoia and misogyny.

Brattin argued that men are the real victims of reproductive oppression and that his bill was just evening the score, by claiming men in Missouri are not allowed to get vasectomies without their wives permission. (Never mind that his bill would go well beyond that, giving a man the power to force a woman to give birth even if she had only had sex with him once.) There is no such law in Missouri, and it’s possible that Brattin confused his doctor’s personal choice to ask for wives to sign off, with an actual law. But regardless of how cognizant he is of what actually happened to him, his argument was crystal-clear: Women are oppressing men and taking away their basic bodily autonomy, and so it’s only “fair” for men to get to do the same to women.

Frequently Thom has conservative guests on like Doug Giles, to teach people how to talk and debate with your conservative family members, friends, coworkers, neighbors, etc.

From whom Thom takes his orders is for himself to say.

All you have to do is see the usual cheerleaders, who the TOS forbids me from naming, show up whenever Seabeyond gets banned. They either cheer or threaten to, as one of them did "straighten me out" attack anyone who disagrees, like a certain person that fancies himself a lumberjack did. Sad to say, whether it is the "liberal men" who think "feminism has gone too far." Or the GOP who want their wimmin barefoot and pregenant, or frankly the Isis types who look forward to wraping women in veils and selling them on markets, they are all the same face behind masks, a bunch of little boys who realize that no, the 21st century will not set them as the "defuaslt" powers, where just by being the man they had the lion's share of everything.

Yes, all the same face!

First time I heard 'feminists hate men and have taken the idea too far' 5 or 6 years ago, I couldn't believe my ears, was too shocked to respond.
Since then, I hear it from young volunteers at our volunteer fire department, friends' sons I know so I speak right up.

Stir up old animosity on a gut level as part of pushing the country way back. And giving more of the GOP voters an "instinctive" resistance to a woman president.

Rather than simply questioning the severity of a problem, or even questioning its existence, the Right invents its mirror image. It neutralizes possibly well-meaning but ill-informed bystanders into shrugging and disregarding the issue. It neutralizes corporate media heads who are made uncomfortable by our even bringing up the matter; they conclude that we should agree to disagree.

Every day is Opposite Day on the Right.

The difference in men and how they think in the south compared to other areas is a real eye opener. Laws down here are made by men, for men, and the women are atrocious too. They do everything they can to support their own oppression. I wish people could see how the people in my hometown really are. It would absolutely astonish most people to hear and see the things these morons say and do.

Most people here are uber religious, superstition, paranoid, addicted to meth and/or crack, etc. It's a crappy place to live, but the poverty is so crushing, it is very hard to escape. Very few make it out of my hometown alive. It is a local phenomenon that people talk about. I take it you don't live in a rural area, but what I describe is way more commonplace in rural areas down here than what you describe. Of course, things are different in the larger cities. They are pretty civilized in the larger cities. Not where I live though.

Sat Dec 27, 2014, 03:22 AM

In this novel women need to become mothers in order to be useful/productive members of society. If they aren't productive by age 50, and if they aren't financially successful, they have to trade medical experimentation and organs for their State Support and move into The Unit so no one can see what's happening to them.

At one point the female protagonist of the story, who is approaching 50, talks about her affairs have never turned into marriage. At one point her lover (who is married) mansplains to her about women who used to be able to have abortions whenever they want and who now poke holes in condoms, etc, to secretly have a child - and how unfair it was for men not to get any say in being fathers. Somehow she gets convinced by all these "men's rights" and she is shamed by the fact she has poked a few of these secret holes herself, so she lets it go (except for one sad loss of dignity where she begs him to leave his wife to save her life - which he declines to do: apparently her rights were limited to being a great side lay for him), even though it ultimately comes at her own ultimate expense.

Weird how prescient this book was in so many ways.
